Brian Burke On Chris Pronger

Brian Burke appeared on Fan590 about an hour ago.  Burke talked Leafs and then was asked about the Pronger to Toronto rumors.  His response, “He is not coming here, not a chance.”

Burke then went on to say the package Anaheim GM Bob Murray would get for Pronger is a “#1 pick and a kid.”  I found it a bit interesting Burke did not say if he is traded, but instead just said this is the type of package Anaheim will get for Pronger.

You can listen here and the Pronger topic starts at the 7:20 mark..

I’m sure there’s some way to construe this as tampering.  At least, that’s what the old Ducks’ GM would have done…

As Burke said in the interview, he can talk about it, just can’t express interest in the player but he can pee all over rumors…

I’m not wholly against the Ducks moving Pronger this spring, but I’d think it’d have to be a better package than a pick and a kid.  The Ducks have ten or so UFAs that have to be a higher priority for Bob Murray than Pronger, and with so few outright “sellers” this trade deadline, if he can’t get a better return than what Burke indicated then there’s no real reason or hurry to send Pronger packing, I’d think.

Bear in mind this is all just my speculation, though.

I agree Earl, a roster player from the team trading for Pronger may be included too.  But I guess it does depend how much salary the Ducks want back in return.

Well, my point mainly is that Pronger is the only real blueliner the Ducks have under contract for next year—everyone else is a kid or a UFA.  They’ll be rebuilding that blueline no matter what, so for the right price I guess it makes sense to move Pronger.  But I’d think you’d have to “wow” Anaheim’s GM in order to unseat the one legitimate piece he does have in place for next year.

If there’s no real “wow” factor, I’d just wait and deal with the UFA list—Niedermayer, Niedermayer, Pahlsson, Marchant, Morrison, Moen, Montador, Hedican, Huskins, Beauchemin—it seems to me that unless there is an offer that is really compelling, GM Murray should work off of that list first.  Moving Pronger seems like priority #11.

Love him or hate him, Burke is a great interview.

All this Pronger chatter makes no sense to me. With Niedermayer likely done next year, why trade him? Especially with Anaheim looking at a 4th or 5th seed. The only way it makes sense to me is if Bob Murray knows something that no one else does. Maybe he just wants to put his stamp on the team, but to me it makes little sense.
