Brind’Amour Stays With Canes

from the Carolina Hurricanes,
Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has agreed to terms with Captain Rod Brind’Amour on a five-year contract.
The deal will pay the veteran centerman $4 million in each of the first three years, and $3 million in each of the last two years, and is in lieu of the 2006-07 option on his prior contract.

I don’t believe it will haunt them, Brind’Amour and Chelios are two NHL athletes who condition and train so vigorusly that their bodies just don’t seem to break down.
Brind’Amour led all fowards in icetime this season, I just refuse to believe that he will breakdown from that within the next 4-5 years. He’ll still be a warrior well into his 40’s.

I know Rod Brind’Amour was instrumental in Carolina’s success, is coming off arguably his best season, he earned such a contract offer and is perhaps the most physically fit athlete in hockey, but he’s also 36.
Perhaps this 5 year salary cap commitment will come back to haunt Carolina in time?
