Broadcasters Need To Walk A Fine Line

from Drew Remenda of the Seagate Broadcaster Blog,

Every once in a while we come under fire for our work. That comes with the job. Every one of us has been called on the carpet by our superiors for transgressions on the air. In those situations it’s usually because we were harsh and negative about the Sharks. We have never been told what to say but we are reminded that we have to strike a balance between journalistic objectivity and positive exuberance for all things teal. We are reminded we are not journalists. To be smart and don’t insult the intelligence of the fans but at the end of the day the people should know who you work for. The problem with that philosophy is that it’s hard to cover the parade when you are marching in the band.

...is that it’s hard to cover the parade when you are marching in the band.

And that, my friends, is the quote of the century when it comes to the MSM.

Remenda should avoid using the word “parade”—along with any other term remotely associated with winning a championship.

This guy is the worst color commentater I have had the misfortune of listening to.

I’ve had Center Ice for the last 3 seasons (the best item I’ve ever bought), and in my humble opinion Remenda seems to be one of the least partison hacks out there . He gives credit where credit is due and dosen’t speak for the sake of hearing his own voice (Pierre McGuire).  The Sharks are usually on late and I tend to end up watching them more than any other team out west. I think he does a pretty good job.

Also. is it me or does it seem that the teams in the east have a higher pct. of unwatchable color commentators per capita? They seem to be much more bias and over-the-top (I’m lookin’ at you Washington & Carolina). That don’t analyze as much as they just show a replay and state the play over. They definitely give too much blame or credit to one player on any given play. Everything is at the extreme. It’s either the best play ever or the worst play ever. Sometimes hockey plays are just hockey plays. And hockey is a game of mistakes, usually. If there wasn’t any then there would never be a goal.

I can’t stand Drew Remenda, I’d rather poke my eyes out with a fork than listen to him.  Of course there are much worse (Terry Chrisp) but he is really painful and very rarely objective.  I really dislike that the teams won’t let their announcers be critical of the teams.  Peter McNab sounds horrible on Avs broadcasts but I’ve heard him away from the umbrella of the Avs organization and he actually sounds intelligent when freed from the organizations reins.  I think it would make for more interesting broadcasts if announcers were really allowed to say what they think.

One reason I like Ken Daniels and Mickey Redmond is the fact that they do tend to “call ‘em as they see ‘em” (especially Mickey).

Remenda is awesome. Glad to see him back in SJ. He wasn’t a good fit for HNIC.

SJ fans and ownership knock him for being too critical of the Sharks. Yet fans of the opposition play the predictably cliche’ and worn-out “homer” card.

Credit to him and Randy Hahn for being the only guys in teal showing up to do their jobs in the post-season year after year after year after year.
