Burke Not Blown Away By Kaberle Offers

via Sportsnet,
Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brian Burke expects Tomas Kaberle to be in the lineup on opening night, and will be shocked if the defenceman is not.
Burke made the comments on Thursday during a press conference where former NHLer Dave Poulin was introduced as the club’s new vice-president of Hockey Operations.
“I’d have to be blown away,” Burke said in response to moving Kaberle before the season. “But that hasn’t happened and I don’t see what happening.”

I hate to say it because a) I generally think Brian Burke is a bag of shit and b) as a non-Leafs fan living in Toronto, I love to see them fail, but I think Burke’s smartened up on dealing Kaberle.
He managed to unload the far more problematic contract of Kubina and picked up Komisarek and Beauchemin. Add those two to Kaberle and Luke Schenn and that’s a nice looking top 4. It’s also the first time in a few years that a Leaf goalie has had that good of a defense corps in front of him.
They’ve got some potentially good goaltending (I’d like to think that between Gustavsson pushing him and the defense in front of him, Vesa Toskala should have a good year), they’ve got some sandpaper and they’ve got some speed up front. This could be a playoff team.
Why would you want to get rid of Kaberle? He wouldn’t get back what Kabby’s worth, so what’s the point? You’ve got a top pairing defenseman making less than he’s worth. Isn’t that what you want?!?! Especially to offset the insane overpayment they’re giving Jeff Finger.

I was going to get my brother in law a Leafs jersey for a birthday present, so I decided to look at the roster to see what player I should put on it. I couldn’t find 1 feasible player to pick! Maybe Schenn, but really who wants a boring stay at home Dman’s jersey? I’m pretty ambivalent about the Leafs, but one thing is for sure; the Leafs need to make a splash in the FA market and bring in a top level stud to be the face of the franchise.

Ask him who is his favorite player. That way you know he will be happy with his birthday gift - or (and I know some people think of it as a cop-out, but they can shut up), get him a gift certificate and he can choose his own jersey.
Another option would be get him a jersey without any name or number, and then he can choose who he wants. That way if no one appeals to him right now, he can wait until he decides who he wants.
The team has changed quite a bit over the last offseason, and I think it’s smart to see how they come together next season before making any more changes.
