Burke Options On Penner

from Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal,
If the Anaheim Ducks decide today that Penner, who’s a very large No. 17 there, won’t be one of their biggest ducklings any longer because the Oilers’ $21.25-million US offer sheet is too rich for their blood, the 24-year-old forward can probably have just about any number he wants here. We know No. 71 is available, with Petr Sykora flying the coop for Pittsburgh.
Ducks general manager Brian Burke, who was steamed at Oilers general manager Kevin Lowe last week for making the raid on Penner, has until today to make up his mind.
If Burke decides to match the offer sheet, he notifies the NHL, the NHLPA and the player or his agent that he’s staying in Anaheim for the Oilers’ offer of $4.25 million a year through the 2012-13 season.
Burke can also call Lowe. Or not.
If he decides Penner is too big a financial gulp for his owners, then Burke presumably lets the deadline pass and the Oilers have a kid who scored 29 goals in his first full NHL season last year.
What do you think, does Penner remain a Duck or move on to Edmonton?

My guess is that Burke walks away - it just doesen’t make sense for him to match and he’s a smart hockey man. I’m also guessing that Kevin Lowe is going to find fewer GM’s willing to talk to him when he needs to make a trade - unless it’s an absolute steal for that team.

I can’t see any circumstance where Burke takes on this contract. He has a history of being hard nosed as far as salary is concerned, and given that this is a young player who hasn’t proven his worth over time, I don’t think he would match it if he had $20 Million in cap space just on principal alone. He is not going to set the bar that high for guys like Perry and Getzlaf. He will take his picks and run, and will probably end up with a high pick in next years draft! People talk about Lowe making this move to save his a**, I see this costing him in the long run more than anything!

Yep, Burke will walk away. Especially after saying that Edmonton was paying crazy money for Penner.

Anyone know what time we can expect news on this?

Burke has 2 hours and 25 minutes to decide.
I will go out on a limb and suggest he does match, in the last hour.

All along I have stated he will match, if I change my mind now, my reputation goes down the drain, lo, so I am sticking with my original prediction.

Somehow I highly doubt Paul that your reputation will go down the drain if Burke matches.
The only guy I can think of who’s reputation has already gone down the drain and made its way out to the sea is Eklund . LOL

Fixed.
Watching all this coverage on the bridge collapse and trying to post at the same time is a challenge.

Regardless of what he’s thinking, you know that Burke would let Lowe sweat it out until the last minute! This way he is tying Kevin’s hands for a week from doing anything else. I’d still be shocked if he matches b/c he’ll then have to pay a bunch of other guys a King’s..er Duck’s..Ransome!

Penner’s gone. Period. Even, in my opinion, if both Selanne and Niedermayer retired.
What happens if Burke matches? He’s over the cap and has to trade players to get under, and he doesn’t want to lose anyone else. He will also be missing cap for next year to sign Getzlaf and Perry, who he probably wants more, and even with space he’d be vulnerable to Lowe blows of high offers that he couldn’t match easily if he matched the Oilers offer sheet. He also says that no, Lou, you got it wrong with Zajac. 30-goal scorers who average about a point per playoff game aren’t worth 3 million a season. They’re worth well over 4 million, even with well under a point per playoff game. Managers are smartening up, and realize that precedents are dangerous ones. Not matching would allow Burke to downplay that offer in possible arbitrations next year with Getzlaf and Perry as a desperate stab for talent, rather than legitimizing that number by matching it.
Burke won’t match, because Penner wasn’t and won’t be the key to the Cup, whereas his other players were and will be. Plus, those three draft picks for next year will come in handy in that deep draft. Maybe if the Oilers dive hard, they could even get Kyle Turris. How’s that sound? Skip it, Brian, and smile.
