Burke Sends A Message

from Dan Wood of the OC Register,

While the continuing need to create salary-cap space was the primary incentive, there was further motivation behind the Ducks sending veteran defenseman Sean O’Donnell to the Kings only hours before the Ducks scored a 2-1 shootout victory in exhibition action Tuesday night at Staples Center.

“It’s not why we did it, but hopefully some other guys will get a message here,” Ducks general manager Brian Burke said, echoing sentiments expressed by Coach Randy Carlyle the past three days. “Our camp has been going pretty well, but we need some guys to pick up their game. We’re not going at a clip that’s satisfactory to us.”

added 7:06am, Craig Custance of Sporting News Today has a Q & A with Burke.  One thing that surprised me was Burke’s response to a possible NHL European expansion.

Sure, Brian.  And we all believed that you were waiving Bryzgalov out of the kindness of your heart…and we all know McDonald was dealt because he asked for it, and Schneider was kicked to the curb as a message to everyone else, right?

Is it just me, or does anyone else think it’s a little odd to do something to one player as a proxy for others?

I would think that if a player was responsive to instruction, he would already know what he needed to do to improve and be doing that - and if he wasn’t, he’d see what happened to someone else and figure that since he is better, the same thing won’t happen to me.

Makes more sense to talk directly to the player of concern instead of forcing him to read the tea leaves of trades and waivers of other players.

Did you see that, fellas?  If I’m not happy with you, I’m not scared to ship you off to the detriment of the team and get pretty much nothing in return!

The most interesting thing about that Custance article is “Would I sign the same two guys (Bertuzzi and Schneider), yeah probably.  Hindsight is easy.”

Well, yeah, it IS easy.  Except when you can’t even properly emply it.  Hindsight is easy, yet he would probably make the same mistake again, if given the chance, knowing what has happened?  What a moron!
