Burke Wants Some Issues Addressed

from the CP via the Globe and Mail,
Brian Burke says he will abide by the NHL’s request to end his criticism of Kevin Lowe and the Edmonton Oilers, but the Anaheim Ducks general manager still had plenty to say Thursday.
In a careful, measured statement, Burke said he had no intention of defying the league but did address some of Lowe’s recent stinging comments about three of his players and his hockey market.
“There is no question in our mind or defiance about the league’s authority here,” Burke said in the statement first read to Ducks beat writers on a conference call and then posted on the NHL club’s website. “We accept their authority to stop this and we intend to stop it.
“However, several things were said last Friday that I believe need to be addressed.”
added 10:45pm, from Eric Stephens from the LA Times,
Any action taken against the Oilers isn’t likely. Bill Daly, the league’s No. 2 official, said there is no current investigation into Burke’s charge of “tampering” or the circumstances surrounding the Niedermayer signing.
Speaking generally, Daly said tampering penalties can range from moderate to very large fines and can include the loss of draft picks.

Wow. If I was Little Gary I would not be happy.
“Yeah, hi Brian, this is Gary Bettman. What part of ‘Shut the *#@k’ up didn’t you understand?”

Damn, is this guy’s egomania way off the charts or what?
Just has to get the last word in.

What an ass. He talked trash for a year before Lowe finally put him in his place… and now it’s (in my best whiny little brother tattle tale voice) “mooooom… kevin made fun of me. i want an investigation"(sniffle, sniffle)
Grow up Burke! It’s a friggin business. If Lowe didn’t offer Penner a number you thought was unfair, he wouldn’t have gotten him. That’s it- you know it, everyone knows it. It’s the rules. GET OVER IT!
seriously… shut up.
{does anyone think that if Vancouver had signed an offer sheet with Fillpula for enough money that the Wings couldn’t match, $4.5 million a year or something. Would we really be listening to Ken Holland bitch about if for the next year? or would he just have him amply replaced by the next day?}

Not to insult myself, but Burke sounds pretty much like 98% of Messageboard posters in the world, right?
Talks tons of spit? Check.
Howls like a little girl if spit-talked back? Check.
Wildly skewed view of reality? Check.
Wrenches things around in a plea to moderators because he knows he’s losing an argument? Check.
Seriously, if the dude starts sending letters to the league offices signed ‘1337Burke Haxxor’, he’s all the way there.

“It is our understanding that clubs are not entitled to express interest in the services of a player belonging to another NHL organization,” said Burke.
Well then how in the hell are trades made you frickin’, what’s the word I’m looking for, oh right, moron.
“There is no question in our mind or defiance about the league’s authority here,” Burke said...“We accept their authority to stop this and we intend to stop it.
“However…
Just hilarious.

We intend to stop it… uhhhh… tomorrow! Yeah, that’s it, tomorrow. We intend to stop it tomorrow. Really. Tomorrow. We mean it. Gary told us to shut up, so shut up is what we’re going to do, starting tomorrow. After tomorrow you won’t hear a word from us. Not even a peep. Because we intend to stop it tomorrow. We’re starting to begin to commence to get ready to zip our lips—tomorrow. We’re not kidding!

I didn’t know you could tamper with a player who had signed a long-term contract less than 48 hours earlier. Tell me, Mr. Burke, what other fine acts of sedition can one commit under this Brave New World CBA?

Funny, but you don’t hear people called “blowhards” that much anymore. Seems to fit here.
I’m glad to hear he’s going to comply with the league request and keep his mouth shut - maybe later, as soon as he makes this one last point…

sounds like Parros and Stortini are going to have one helluva go at it come the first Ducks-Oilers game next season. That being said, Burke needs to focus on meeting the Cap and not making trades like Andy McDonald for Doug Weight, while Lowe should try and figure out how to obtain a goaltender, possibly a defense to play in front of the pipes as well. The only reason either team’s been to the Cup recently is Chris Pronger.

He’s got a right to be pissed at Lowe...and quite frankly, after what he did by offering Thomas Vanek $50 million, he can go fu*k himself!
Guys like Lowe should NOT be pulling this crap in the league, and like Melrose and Burke said a year or so ago, guys like him are BAD for the NHL. Knock the sh*t off K. Lowe, before I send Erik Cole up to Edmonton with a shotgun for your a$$. >:-D

Doesn’t the blowhard jackass know the player can REFUSE an offer sheet for an RFA like Penner was?
Popmous ass and I can’t wait for him to go back to Vancouver and pick up where he left off… or was it ran from?
Then again he was employed by the NHL too so we have to remember to keep our expectations in the toilet for Burkey Boy.

Brian Burke is one hell of a GM. He knows how to spot talent and can put together a good team. He’ll also back anyone in his organization and will stick up for his boys. This part I respect!
But Burkie suffers from a serious illness which affects several hockey people every year. People like Don Cherry, Shawn Avery and others like with this illness. He suffers from “Ishouldjustshutmyfatmouth-ituos”. I really don’t even want to hear this GM that I actually didn’t mind in Vancouver, to just shut up!!!! Tampering by saying he like Perry??? How many GM’s could have been accused of tampering when Gretzky was playing? I’m sure more then one GM express how they wished he was on their team! Burke can start a class action lawsuit for all the GM’s who ever had Gretz on their team!!!
I fear Burke’s illness will only get worse one he moves to Toronto. Like a meth addict moving into a meth lab. But Burkie is addicted to hearing his own voice. I dread the day of hearing Brian Burke flooding our Leafs bias Canadian sports media with his useless and senseless verbal diarrhea!!

Does anybody know what the Scott Niedermayer stuff is about? Besides the hints Lowe dropped I hadn’t heard anything about this.

I think Holland would be down about it but I think he’d move on. I don’t know Holland to NOT have a backup plan for each and every one of his players.

If Vancouver (or anyone else) had taken Filppula via a high-level offer sheet, here’s what I would have expected to here from Ken Holland…
Because of cap limitations, we are informing the league that we will not be able to match the offer made to Valteri Filppula today. Valteri has been a tremendous player for us during his stay here in Detroit. We wish him the best and we look forward to playing against him the next time we play [insert team name here].
There’s no doubt that Valteri will be hard to replace in our lineup, but we have a number of options that we will be exploring between now and the start of the regular season. We, and our players, look forward to the opportunities that this situation presents.
I don’t think the concept of “whining” is even in Kenny repertoire.

That’s probably what the vast majority of GM’s would have said, though. Burke is one of the few who wouldn’t have kept his head in public - most other teams would have been steamed in private, but in public would have been very polite. After all, that same player might be back on their team later in his career, or they might have an opportunity to improve their own team in a deal with that same GM later on.
Best not to blow a bridge to kingdom come if you might just possibly need to cross it again.
