Burke’s Son Brendan

from John Buccigross of ESPN,

While you’re at Miami, Dad is now in Southern California as executive vice president and general manager for Anaheim and the Ducks win it all in 2007. You drink out of the Stanley Cup with Pops in the Anaheim dressing room. You love your father, you’re proud of him, but you are hiding something from him that you will soon hide no more.

In 2008, Dad is chosen as general manager of the 2010 U.S. Olympic hockey team and named a recipient of the 2008 Lester Patrick Trophy for outstanding service to hockey in the United States. His résumé is relentless. Today, Dad runs the most profitable NHL team, the Toronto Maple Leafs, and is, without question, one of hockey’s more magnetic and interesting characters along with Don Cherry and Alex Ovechkin. Dad televises well.

So, imagine, this is your father. You? Probably destined to be “Burkie’s boy” in Canada even if you resurrected George Harrison and John Lennon and reunited The Beatles. Imagine.

as much as it pains me to compliment buccigross, this really was a well written and inspiring article.

this is a subject that remains taboo in the hockey world and articles like these are definitely a step forward. somehow homophobia is the last remaining tolerated form of open prejudice. my guess is there is a large segment among those on this forum who are extremely homophobic - folks who are generally nice people, who know hockey and are pleasant to banter with on here, but who simply can’t tolerate the idea that some people are just plain born this way.

there was a puck daddy blog weeks back about homosexuality in hockey and the comments on the thread really showed the true colors of the hockey community and why this is not an issue that will be solved quickly. the ignorant hatred spewed by otherwise thoughtful, kind people was just mind blowing.

well, to all those reading this who are filled with disgust at the fact that this is even being discussed… look in the mirror. from my experience, it seems that those who yell out the loudest about how wrong homosexuality is tend to be the deepest in the closet. we always hear about the homophobic preacher-type who has made it their mission to curse gay teenagers and damn them to hell only to get caught with a male prostitute? or politicians who are SO anti-homosexual until sure enough… busted in a stall or hunting congressional pages.

the fear and hatred has to stop. it’s just sad and ignorant.

I think the appearance of bigotry has nothing to do with sports fans - if someone does not know anyone personally who is a member of some group, be it blacks, or Muslims, or Jews, or atheists, or homosexuals, it is very easy to lump them all together in one stereotypical mass.  When such a person thinks of a “gay man” he might think of some cartoonish image that he or she has seen on television because they have no other reference, and that is all they know.  It’s different when they know someone and the cartoon is replaced with “my brother” or “my friend” or “my nephew” or “my son.”  Putting a face to any group is more likely to make a person realize that these are individual people instead of one big mass of random humanity.

Sports fans are not unique - not even close.  There are people who are far more virulently hateful all over the place.
