By Reporting To Manitoba, Schneider Set To Collect $250K

from Ian MacIntyre of the Vancouver Sun,
Even just going where he is told, Mathieu Schneider is creating another problem for the Vancouver Canucks. He also stands to collect a $250,000 US bonus payment on Jan. 15.
The 40-year-old defenceman, who cleared waivers Wednesday after leaving the National Hockey League team, reported Sunday to the Canucks’ minor-league affiliate in Winnipeg. The re-assignment of Schneider, whom the Canucks were unable to trade or place with another organization, puts the Manitoba Moose one veteran over the American Hockey League limit of five and coach Scott Arniel will have to sit out a player to make room for the defenceman.
But by reporting, Schneider continues to collect his NHL base salary of $1.55 million, which includes a $1 million signing bonus divided over four payments.

Schneider wasn’t happy with his playing time and started becoming a cancer in the locker room, or so the reports go since no one will go on the record yet.

The Canucks should have known they were signing an old defenseman that was way past his prime. They signed him to a contract, he has lived up to his end of the contract they should live up to their end and quit crying. They were stupid enough to sign him when no one else would and now they are mad they have to pay him? What were they thinking when they signed the senior citizen?

Last I checked you earn your ice time. He didn’t. If anyone is crying, it’s Schneider (again, so the reports suggest).
Regardless of his age (and even if past his prime, he still had 32 points last year), he’s been largely invisible and that’s on a good night. If the coaching staff wants better results from him and his response is to piss and moan, who’s more at fault?
I’d agree that Vancouver should never have signed him, but that doesn’t excuse his actions either.

Perceptions of Schneider as a paycheck player aside, it seems to me that the Canucks created this problem. I fail to see how “hoping he would retire” could be considered a responsible tactic for building a team.
