Can Gordon Succeed With The Islanders

from Jim Kelley at Sports Illustrated,
It’s possible it could all work out for Gordon. Owner Charles Wang might suddenly develop some patience and Snow might forge a relationship that would allow Gordon to grow as a coach while Snow grows as a general manager….
But at the end of the day, (Scott) Gordon signed on to coach a poor hockey team that struggles to attract talent from the ownership office on down. Want proof? Just dig up that picture of just two seasons ago when Wang was surrounded by Nolan, Milbury, former GM Neil Smith and advisors like Pat LaFontaine and ask where they—and the Islanders—are now. In less time than you can say “what the heck”, only Wang remains and the Stanley Cup is not in that picture.

Kelley is slipping. A team cannot be least “storied” in the “present”. It is the abundance of history that makes the Islanders present so dismal. 19 playoff victories in a row and those silly four stripes on their jersey is what often weighs the team down and makes them a pale imitation of what once was.
Comparing the Islanders to the Leafs is also a tired cliche. The Leafs 40 vs Isles 28 years of futility isn’t even close comparing the abundance of resources available to the Leafs. In fact, the Islanders have made the playoffs more often and at the expense of the Leafs over the past five years. So the Islanders should be the ones offended by the comparison.
Why would Nolan, Smith and LaFontaine even be in the picture if the Islanders could not attract of ice talent? A name like Muckler has done wonders for the Leafs hasn’t he? It is the impatient and meddlesome owner that causes such high turnover. That and an ever changing blueprint for success, but front office stability is no guarantee either (Milbury for 10 years). The Sabres with Regier (Islander castoff before his current tenure) and Ruff have had a rollercoaster ride of success (Cup Finals, Division Champs) and failure (No playoffs last season, Drury, Briere, Dumont, Bankruptcy, Buffaslug) as well. They just haven’t had to change the nameplates on the front office as often.
Fianlly, to imply that Gordon is just some AHL coach lucky to have a shot at the NHL versus hiring re-treads like Maurice (great quotes - no wins), Hartley (I coached Sakic and Forsberg to a Cup) and Crawford (Bertuzzi played for me and Isles once upon a time) is nonsensical. Gordon was on every short list for a head coaching job and it was just a matter of time that he got the call. The Islander may actually being doing it right for the first time in 25 years and this is cause for criticism?
