Canada Waiting For The Stanley Cup

from Joe O’Connor of the National Post,

What there has not been, at least not since the Montreal Canadiens circled the ice at the old Forum on June 9, 1993, is a Stanley Cup party on Canadian soil.

“If someone had told me after June 9, 1993 that the Montreal Canadiens would have gone 15 years without winning the Cup, and that no other Canadian team would win the Cup either,” Jacques Demers says, “I would have said to them: ‘Absolutely not, there is no way.’”

But there is a way, and an unassailable truth: The country that gave hockey to the world has had to tune in every June to watch Gary Bettman present the Stanley Cup to an American team.

Not quite true.  Some of those teams have been there in person (lookin’ at you, Ottawa).

Plus it’s not “every June”, not when I can still remember the year without hockey (lookin’ at you, Owners).

See this is what I don’t get.  All the best players come from Canada, right? And according to all the Canadian fans, especially Canadiens fans, all Canadian players want to play for their hometown team. So if my logic is correct, shouldn’t Canada always win the Cup, like every year?

I’m thinkin some of those “self entitled” Canadian hockey fans just might be wrong in their thinking…

(And my apologies to Alanah and Senshobo, this rant was more directed towards Oilers fans and Habs fans.
