Canadians Stealing Americans

from Bob McKenzie of TSN,

Take that, Uncle Sam.

With the naming today of Kelowna defenceman Tyler Myers to Canada’s U-18 team, Hockey Canada is reversing the trend that has seen various editions of Team USA scoop dual citizens out of Canada’s hockey backyard.

Myers was born in Texas but moved to Alberta when he was 10 years old. He played his minor hockey in Calgary, attended Notre Dame College in Wilcox, Sask., and has now just completed two full seasons with the Kelowna Rockets of the WHL.

The early days of international hockey likely featured several non-Canadian born players representing Canada at early Olympic Games. Record keeping was shoddy back in the 1920s, and many of the player’s birthplaces remain unknown by hockey researchers today. It is believed that Stanley Wagner (1932 Olympics) was born in Pueblo, Colorado and that Alex Sinclair (1936 Olympics) was born in Liverpool, England. Some sources say Dunc Munroe (1924 Olympics) was born in Scotland, while others say Toronto.
