Per TSN, the Montreal Canadiens have graded Cristobal Huet to the Washington Capitals for a 2nd Round Pick in 2009.
Update1:18pm ET: More at TSN (and thanks the commenter below for pointing out the year of the pick. I’ve updated it.)

Whew! The Caps gave on one of their THREE 2008 second round picks for a somewhat proven goaltender. Loving this trade. The Caps needed to do SOMETHING because Kolzig is getting O-L-D. Recently, he and Johnson have looked good; but the Caps needed a mid to long-term solution.

I think MTL believes they’re set with Price and Halak. CAR won a cup with Ward as a rookie, why can’t Price?
I knew WSH was gonna do something ballsy, but I didn’t see the Huet move coming. I understand it, but I never even thought about it as a possibility.

This also free up cap space for the Canadians… I wonder why?

I was thinking that dealing a goalie was the only way that MTL would stay in the Race for Richards. I didn’t see the Caps getting in on the action, but this works for them. So long, Johnson.

The home town pride in me loves that Carey Price is doing well in MTL. I had considered that Huet would probably have to go somewhere to make room for Price, but even with the home town bias I think it’s too early. Price has been good… most of the time, but not good enough to shoulder a long run into the playoffs. Huet was cheap at 2.5 million. Montreal looks good this year. I just don’t understand this deal.
I am thinking that maybe Huet demanded it because he felt threatened by Price or something. Weird trade.
Gainey is a good GM though, must be more to it.

Wow! How many GM’s around the league are kicking themselves over this one? Huet for a 2009 2nd rounder?!? Even for a UFA…

It’s not even the Caps 2009 second rounder it’s Anaheim’s.
