Canes Need To Make The Right Move

from the Rocky Mount Telegram,
On Friday, the Hurricanes will pick 11th overall in the NHL Entry Draft and should look for a defenseman or checking-line center. This is a weak draft, however, where no instant-impact players exist.
Instead, president and general manager Jim Rutherford, one year removed from his coronation as Executive of the Year, will have to re-energize this team on the fly. There is little salary cap room to sign impact free agents, so any new additions will likely come from a trade that U-Hauls out of town a familiar face.
The right move will send the fan base, an area defined as from Rocky Mount to Greensboro, clamoring for tickets and trinkets. If not, the Hurricanes are destined to become a yearly outsight.

The writer should go to the Cool Bars celebration tonight which will be packed to the rafters with celebrating Caniacs. As usual, the out of town, country bumpkin writers don’t know what they’re talking about when it comes to following the Hurricanes or their fans.

Being a Red Wings fan , I don’t have a dog in this fight, BUT, the writers observations about the merchandise store at RBC Center being closed is , IMO, a non-story.
The RBC Center is well away from any other retail destinations in the area, and it IS the off season, after all. Rest assured that local malls and other retail outlets have plenty of Canes merch available for those interested.
To me, the real story will be whether or not the Canes will be able to sustain the current level of fan interest, after a non-playoff year.
