Can’t Point To Jagr Anymore

from Larry Brooks of the NY Post,

Without Jagr to both blame and lean on all at once, everyone will come under more scrutiny; the coaching staff and the players, alike. For all of his imperfections, Jagr was kind of like that cereal, Captain and Crutch. Now, Jagr can’t be anyone’s excuse. Avery’s absence will be felt on the ice, even if the Rangers are sure he won’t be missed anywhere else.

There will be a gust of fresh air in the room next season that might enter with the Rangers billed as The King and His Court. Henrik Lundqvist, who always has shared the greatest part of the burden with Jagr, will be held to the Brodeur Standard, one that has nothing to do with exchanging salutations or shaking hands.

That has to be the lamest food-related simile ever.

Actually, I don’t think they have to worry about the Rangers drawing fans in Prague even with a reduced Czech content.  Jiri Hudler said several times that his home country is hockey-crazy for all hockey.  Anytime a kid can remember watching or listening to hockey in school because the teachers put it on, I don’t think there should be any concern about interest, Jagr or no Jagr.

I don’t even get it, the cereal is Captain Crunch not Crutch.

Difficult to believe that he will not be in the NHL anymore.  I’m sure he could have found a place if he’d have been willing to accept $4 or $5M (Vancouver how’s that sound?).

The guy has been a strong prolific scorer, and I always admired his choice of the number 68 and what it means to the world stage.

Larry Brooks should’ve remained the Devils’ beat writer; the Rangers bolstered their front and backlines big time with shrewd moves by Sather. Avery’s actions will be missed on the ice? Which actions: a supposed ruptured spleen that caused him to miss end of playoffs but not Vogue’s red carpet a week later? Avery’s like the next Heath Ledger. Also, agree with dude above about that being the most absurdly lame simile or metaphor or whatever, Captain and Crutch? A Larry Brooks byline means nothing more than turn the page, he’s the Garth Snow of “journalists”; the dude predicted the Rangers to win the Cup last season, for crying out loud, Malik and Roszival were our top two d-men heading into pre-season! Speaking of Malik, shouldn’t the Islanders be offering him a $7 mil per year contract right about now to man the blueline with Mark Streit?

So did a lot of other people, or at least predicted they’d be in the final (along with the Sharks).

Though I agree that Brooks is usually a moron, here he’s right.  Even after signing Drury and Gomez last year, Jagr was the guy they looked to for everything offense.  And since he had a down year, it’s not so surprising that the Rangers had one of the lowest goal totals in the league.

As for Avery, you can’t ignore that oft-cited statistic of the Rangers’ record with and without him.  They simply won more with him in their lineup.  I won’t miss him because the fact that he’s an a$$ overshadowed everything for me, but the team just might.  I can’t imagine what Dallas’ opponents must be thinking, now that they have to deal with both Avery and Ott.
