Canucks Need Bodies

The Vancouver Canucks hope to augment their injury-riddled lineup with Matt Pettinger and Kyle Wellwood, should the forwards not be claimed today on recallable waivers from the Manitoba Moose.
Should an NHL club claim either forward, the Canucks would be on the hook for half of their salaries - $500,000 US for Pettinger and $498,750 US for Wellwood - but they have plenty of salary cap space. Money is not the problem for general manager Mike Gillis. Healthy bodies are.
With Pavol Demitra (upper body), Rick Rypien (virus) and Darcy Hordichuk (knee) on the shelf following a 4-2 setback Monday in Chicago, the Canucks hope Pettinger and Wellwood clear so they can skate with the Canucks on Tuesday morning and play that night in Columbus against the Blue Jackets.
