added 4:17pm,
COLUMBUS, OHIO – The Columbus Blue Jackets have acquired defenseman Milan Jurcina and forward Chris Clark from the Washington Capitals in exchange for forward Jason Chimera, club General Manager Scott Howson announced today. The transaction is pending the completion of player physicals.
“We are pleased to add Chris Clark and Milan Jurcina to our hockey club. Both are veteran players who we believe will contribute significantly to our team,” said Howson. “We’d also like to thank Jason Chimera for his contributions to the Blue Jackets organization both on and off the ice over the past four-plus seasons.”
ARLINGTON, Va. – The Washington Capitals have acquired left wing Jason Chimera from the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for right wing Chris Clark and defenseman Milan Jurcina, vice president and general manager George McPhee announced today.
Chimera (chih-MAIR-uh), 30, is an 11-year pro who has played 461 NHL games between Columbus and Edmonton. He has recorded eight goals and nine assists (17 points) while playing all 39 games this season. A 6’2”, 216-pound left-hand shot, he stood tied for sixth on the Blue Jackets in goals and tied for eighth in points.
In his career Chimera has scored at least 14 goals four times, posted at least 30 points three times and topped 90 penalty minutes three times. He has played all but 36 games since the start of the 2005-06 season. A native of Edmonton, Alberta, he was drafted by the Oilers in the fifth round of the 1997 NHL Draft and joined the Blue Jackets via trade from Phoenix (which held his rights during the 2004-05 work stoppage). He will wear No. 25 in Washington, as he did in Columbus.
Clark, 33, was in his fifth year with the Capitals, his fourth as team captain. He totaled 60 goals and 63 assists (123 points) in 240 games with Washington. Jurcina, 26, played four seasons with the Capitals and had six goals and 30 assists (36 points) in 211 games.

Risky to trade away your captain after a great start to the season. Maybe this is to help clear some cap room for a Kovalchuk / Semin trade.
Blue Jackets got some good players from this trade.

looks like we’ll have Captain Ovechkin in the next few days.

I think giving Ovi the C would be a huge mistake. His personality may be fun and care free, but from what I have seen, he does not possess good leadership qualities for a team. I think that Knuble or Laich would be very solid replacements. Of those two, I would pick Laich, as he is a hardworking North American who seems to be well respected by the fans and community. From all accounts Knuble is a great locker room guy too, but since he has only been there half a season, I don’t think he would be the right pick.

Backstrom or Green is the captain…no one else.
Still…this is a horribly lopsided trade. Salary dump or not…a DEFENSEMAN should’ve come back to Washington. They just don’t get it.

Not really, when you consider that, even with the Jurcina trade, Alzner still looks to be the healthy scratch tonight. This kid is a top-6 lock on pretty much any team in the league.
This trade serves 2 purposes: 1) to thin out the Caps’ D ranks (one 5/6 defenseman gone, 2 to go), and, more importantly, 2) to give the Caps about $5.8 million in salary cap space for the rest of the season.
The Caps now become one of, if not the, big player at the trade deadline. McPhee is serious about this being the year to make a Cup run.

Wow is right. Another 2 mil cleared off the Caps cap. Along with Nylander’s 4 mil the Caps will be major players at the deadline for Niedermeyer and any other D-man that’s available.
