from the Washington Post,
It was, without question, the most important game several of the Washington Capitals had ever played in. But it never looked that way.
In a contest that featured all of the intensity of a playoff game, the Capitals’ impressive core of youngsters and veteran goaltender Cristobal Huet buoyed their hope of earning a spot in the playoffs with a 4-1 thumping of the Carolina Hurricanes.

Playing on some of the worst ice in recent NHL history — riddled with cracks like a windshield after a wreck — the Caps scored twice early, then answered a Carolina goal with a power-play goal during a controversial second-period sequence.
Alex Ovechkin took exception to Eric Staal poking at Huet’s glove after a save on Scott Walker on a short-handed two-on-one and threw Staal into the boards.
But the Capitals remained on the power play because a coincidental minor was called on Niclas Wallin in the brawl that followed, and Alexander Semin scored to make it 3-1.

Reading the two accounts pretty much shows you that you have to know your audience and give the people what they want. “Bad ice” and “crisp passes” were two lines that jumped out in the two articles depending on your point of view.

Last time I checked, both teams played on the same bad ice. From what I gathered last night, they had to put the ice down during the day. I know the circus was in town (no, not the Canes) for a while. So they were pretty rushed. Go Bolts!!!

LSB called that a brawl? I think coicidental minors came out of that scrum. That’s comical. Staal might be the biggest wimp in the league… Ovechkin comes over and gives him a little shove and Staal falls to the ice like a sack of potatoes. He had no interest in getting back in the scrum while his teammates were sticking up for him. What a leader…
Some of the calls were bad last night. And they went both ways, although the Canes were on the short end of the stick more often. That being said, no one should feel sorry for them. The Canes have drawn the most penalties in the entire league.
