Caps Trying To Move Nylander To Europe

via Tarik El-Bashir of Capitals Insider,

Michael Nylander has arrived, according to Coach Bruce Boudreau. But how long the veteran will remain in Washington is unclear. Boudreau acknowledged that Nylander and the Caps are actively seeking a deal to send the 36-year-old center to Europe.

“I hope it doesn’t become a distraction,” Boudreau said.

What is it with the Capitals organization and Nylander?  This is the third year that they have not wanted him on their team after signing him to a long term deal, yet they still refuse to just buy the guy out.  Instead, they continue to treat the guy like dog crap.  Hey Fat Ted, just buy him out.

i don’t understand how this is allowed.  you signed the player to the deal.  send him to the minors and see if someone wants him on re-entry waivers.  you shouldn’t be allowed to ‘seek a deal’ with a team that isn’t even in the nhl

Never mind the same division, they don’t even want him on the same continent.

Why not? I see nothing wrong with this. The Caps may very well be pioneers with this. It’s a smart way to ease the cap burden on your club and fix mistake contracts.

I know some people will call this “a loophole,” but that’s a bunch of bull. The league and BoG drafted the entire CBA to their spec, this is how it is. They can deal with it when smart teams figure out how to manipulate the cap to maximize the amount of talent they can fit on their active NHL roster.

If anything, this goes to show that the NHL, KHL, and IIHF need to sit down and get serious about shaking out a PROPER transfer agreement. If they had one, it’d be a lot easier for situations like this to get worked out, and not only that, but it would give the Caps an opportunity to actually bag some cash or some sort of compensation from whatever European team they’re dealing with, rather than just using it as a way to clear up space.

By and large, we live in a free market world. It always astonishes me how many American sports fans hate the idea of having a true free market in their sports leagues.

If it’s good enough for our day to day lives and survival, it should be good enough for the NHL, eh?
