Celebrating Uwe Krupp Night

from Adrian Dater of All Things Avs,

Just writing the name “Uwe Krupp” brought back a little tingle to my fingers.

It’s probably been about three years since I have done that, and that’s far too long. Uwe Krupp will be back in Denver Monday night for “Uwe Krupp Night” at the Pepsi Center, and even though I have Monday off, I can’t miss Uwe Krupp Night. So I’m going to go, maybe just sit in the stands and watch the game with the rest of you. Screw the press box. The view is the worst in the building anyway.

Lots of old memories when Krupp’s name comes up, none bigger, of course, than the goal he scored to win the 1996 Stanley Cup. It’s a night I can never forget, naturally, not the least of which because I still have a t-shirt with the front page of the next day’s Denver Post reproduced on it. Ever see a t-shirt with a story you wrote on it? It’s a weird thing, believe me.

Uwe Krupp has announced that he won’t be able to attend.  His back is really bothering him.  To justify this claim, he sent in this picture to prove how much pain he is in…

...oh wait.

Well…actually…yes.

The headline is:

“Adrian Dater Is an Enormous Tool”

WTF? What did Uwe do in his career with the dive that justifies getting his own night? Was Jon Klemm not available? Ooops, silly me. This is the team that retired the jersey number of someone who played one season for that team. When is Rene Corbet Night? I don’t want to miss that one.

Is the score-o prize a ride on the dogsled with Uwe?

Well, Uwe scored the game winning, Stanley Cup winning goal that brought the state of Colorado it’s first championship in anything ever.  I would say that’s pretty big.

Ray Borque played with the Avs for a season and a half.  Just nit picking on that one.
But we retired his number to honor one of the best defensemen ever that finally, after 20+ years, won a Cup with the Avs.

You are really digging to insult the Avs aren’t you?  Well, good try, but it was a little weak.
Making fun of a picture of Uwe and his dogs?  Really?  Sure.  Maybe I’ll dig up a pic of a Wing and one of their hobbies and rip on that.

You should man (no sarcasm intended).

Didn’t the Wings have Krupp as well? I repressed it but it’s coming back.

Yes, Krupp played for the Wings the year after the Avs won the Cup.

Yes, but the Wings aren’t having Uwe Krupp Night then, are they?  Nor did they raise Larry Murphy or Slava Fetisov’s number to the rafters just because they joined along on the ride for a Cup.  Those honors are apparently only reserved for former Avs and Rangers.

Whoosh…right over your head, AvsRock.

Yes, Krupp played for the Wings the year after the Avs won the Cup.

He also played for the Wings the year after the Wings won the Cup in ‘98.  The dogsled joke is in reference to the fact that out of the 4 years on the contract he signed with the Wings, those were the only two seasons which he played games in.  In the first season after 22 games, he wanted to retire because he said his bad was terrible and he had 3 years left on a guaranteed contract paying him 4+ mil per season.  2 weeks after that, it was discovered he was still competing in dogsled races.
