from Robert Tychkowski of the Edmonton Sun,
Seven points with 40 games to go is nothing. But if this team is going to make another dramatic stretch drive, it needs a dramatic makeover.
Here are a few resolutions they should make for 2008:
1. PLAY THE KIDS
It’s time to end the love affair with reliable defensive players. They’re a dime a dozen and judging by the 14th-place Edmonton’s 129 goals against, second most in the conference, they’re not all that reliable anyway.
The players who should be getting the ice time are the dynamic young kids who are going to be leading this team in the very near future. Sam Gagner, Robert Nilsson and Andrew Cogliano.

I’m gonna have to call shenanigans on this one. Either Tychkowski’s definition of “a few years back” differs wildly from mine, or this just plain never happened.
In this century, the Oilers have made the playoffs in ‘00, ‘01, ‘03, and ‘06. In those four years, after games played on January 4th, they were tied for 8th, 8th, tied for 7th, and 6th. In other words, the Oilers have never gone from being out of the playoffs on January 4th to qualifying for the playoffs in the last seven seasons.
In fact, going from “out” on January 4th to “in” at the end of the season was fairly uncommon over that span (at least in the West), happening only five times. The largest point margin overcome was seven, done by Vancouver in ‘02. If we want to find distinction for the Oil, they did squander the largest point cushion on January 4th, going from 13 points up on the ninth place team to out of the playoffs in ‘02.
