Changes In The Northwest

The NHL’s off-season game of musical chairs got under way in a hurry this year with most of the carnage centred on the once muscular Northwest Division, where the three teams that missed the playoffs began significant restructuring programs.

Colorado Avalanche started the proceedings by firing general manager Francois Giguere after the team’s worst season in its Denver history.

Giguere was ultimately the fall guy for the man he replaced, Pierre Lacroix, and is further proof of the perils of taking over a franchise in the early stages of a downward slide. Lacroix lucked into a great situation, inheriting a team on the rise, thanks to the work done by his predecessor, Pierre Page.
