From Andrew Lupton at the National Post,
More than 20 years after her death, the Philadelphia Flyers continue to channel the spirit of singer Kate Smith.
Born in 1907, Smith was a famous broadway, stage and radio singer whose name became synonymous with the song God Bless America after she sung it to glowing reviews on Armistice Day in 1938.
continued explaining the story of why Kate Smith’s performance was resurrected by film at Wachovia Center last night. And here’s a video of one of her Philly performances, prior to the 1974 Stanley Cup.

How in the world can the league office allow this madness to continue? Don’t they know that just like octopus swinging, the singing of God Bless America—even on videotape—is extremely dangerous and has been proven to incite fans to cheer for their home team! IT MUST BE STOPPED NOW!!!!!!!

In all seriousness, good for the Flyers. Like throwing octopi in Detroit, God Bless America in Philly is a great NHL tradition.
Although the Flyers were never my team (or even my “second” or “third” team), I can still remember the emotions I felt as a kid watching Kate Smith sing it live (it must have been the Cup-clinching game in 1974...the Bruins were my second team as a kid).

Living 30 min. away from Buffalo,I was a lucky young lad to have a Dad who loved the game of hockey.Quite often I was able to accompany him to enjoy the Sabres, and their foes for the evening. As luck would have it, Buffalo made it to the finals with the Philadelphia Flyers during the 74-75 season. I was treated to two unusual gifts that year. The triple overtime ‘Game in the Fog” Robert scores on Parent, where even through my yawns, the excitement still ran rampant. The other was.the honour of being there when Kate Smith sang God Bless America. I still get shivers when I recall that wonderful event.Fantastic hockey memories that will last, until I am but a memory.Far removed from those exciting days of hockey at the Aud. I thank god for my dad,the Sabres of that time and the entertainment they provided, and most certainly, the honour bestowed me,by having been there when the wonderful Kate Smith made all of us break out in goosebumps!
