Frisco, Tex - Dallas Stars General Manager Joe Nieuwendyk announced today that right wing Jonathan Cheechoo has accepted an invitation to attend the Dallas Stars’ training camp for a tryout.
“We’re pleased that Jonathan has accepted our invitation to come to our training camp,” Nieuwendyk said. “He has shown the ability to be an effective scorer in this league. He’s a competitor and we’re going to give him an opportunity.”
Cheechoo, 29, played in 61 games with the Ottawa Senators in 2009-10, registering five goals, nine assists and 20 penalty minutes.

So Dallas dumps the face of the franchise but goes after Cheechoo? Seems like Nieuwendyk may have had an issue with Modano. Could it be he was jealous of his popularity and the fact he stayed with one team, while Joe made the rounds? Probably figures if he could leave Toronto and Calgary Mike needed to move on too. I question if a Canadian can understand what Modano meant to the Stars franchise. Pretty sad!!!

Dallas probably feels that they’re reasonably strong at center, but lacks a bit of scoring on the wing. Seeing what Cheechoo can do in camp isn’t exactly the same as reckless enthusiasm in giving him a contract, and any contract would be close to the minimum. I see no personal animosity in this situation.
