from Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press,
“We had a real good talk about what I saw as his role,” Holland said. “He wants to come back for another year, so I would say we’re very close on a contract. The biggest thing was discussing his role—the contract is not an issue.
“It’ll be in the ballpark of what Chris made last year. We’re going to get something done. It’s just a matter of when and how much.”
Chelios, the NHL’s oldest player, made $850,000 this past season.

I swear to God I don’t get this. If Cheli is definitely coming back, signing Lilja (especially for two years) leaves no room on the third pairing for Meech or Quincy…unless Stuart leaves or is not pursued because of his shoulder issues. In that case, Lilja becomes Nick Jr.‘s partner and we can forget about Jr. taking the kinds of chances he did during the playoffs. Whoever plays with Mr. Bonehead will always have to think “be ready to cover for Lils’ mistakes” first.
Yah, Lilja is an excellent shot blocker…but he’s also the D-man equivalent of Dom. No one can ever be comfortable with him on the ice.
At some freaking point, the Wings have to either let the young D-men play or start trading them away for useable assets. Kenny’s infatuation with Lilja is a total mystery (and misery) to me.
