Chelios Talks NHLPA

from Craig Custance of the Sporting News,
On the day after Paul Kelly’s firing as the NHLPA executive director, Chris Chelios is in explaining mode. He was skating today in Detroit, trying to stay in shape as he waits for a contract offer (he’s ruled KHL out and confirmed talks with Nashville). But I imagine most of the calls he’ll get today will be about Kelly’s firing. Even as I type this, Chelios is on his cell in the hallway. He could be ordering a pizza, but I’m guessing Kelly’s firing will dominate most of his discussions.
I asked him what the response has been from his fellow NHLPA members as he explains the thought process behind Kelly’s firing.
“A lot of guys obviously don’t know what happened, couldn’t see it coming,” said Chelios, an NHLPA executive board member. “Half the board couldn’t see this coming until we got to the meetings. At the end of the day, once everybody is filled in on what happened, they’re going to understand and we’re going to move on.”
added 1:00pm, from the CP via TSN,
In an interview with The Canadian Press on Tuesday, Damphousse said Paul Kelly, who was fired by the association’s executive board Monday, was victim of “a kind of paranoia in the group.
“For the new guy coming in, the players need to let him work. There was maybe too much leeway before and now it’s like the guy is in handcuffs. He’s got to be able to work with confidence.”

How is Chelios a union member…he doesn’t even have a team anymore. I really don’t have a problem as far as unions go but a union of millionaires is pretty much a joke. I mean these guys screwed the rookies with a max contract. As far as I’m
concerned pro athlete unions are in cahoots with the owners to suck as much money out of the fans as possible. Neither one does shtt for the game itself. I’m just disgusted that Lindros might have something to do with hockey. He is a piece of garbage with his lisp and a-hole family

Appears the Sporting News is having issues, can’t access anything on the site.

How is Chelios a union member.
Along similar lines…How could the 30-member “executive committee” (or whatever it’s called) vote for Kelly to be fired with representatives who don’t even have a contract with the team they were representing (Manny Malhotra repping Columbus is one example, although I’d bet there are others)? Add the fact that the executive committee also violated it’s own constitution by re-upping Ian Penny for 5 years without consulting Kelly, with Penny then apparently advising them to dump Kelly, and it looks like Kelly could have pretty good case of wrongful dismissal if he chooses.

Okay, so as we have all come to find out Kelly was fired… but no one has even come close to stating why? Paranoia? C’mon, really folks… is that a reason? He was too close to the head guys of the NHL? Cripes, isn’t he supposed to have his nose in there so he is always in the know? Is it that the players are unhappy with the last contract? Did he sleep with everyone’s wives/fincees (seems to be the crux of all NHL players decisions these days according to some)?
I don’t know anything about the ins and outs of the NHL, but from a fans point of view not hearing about NHL and PA arguments, disagreements and attacks was super. I mean I know all the talk has not been positive but at least it has been about the game, its teams and its players at least and not how the NHL and PA cannot work together.
I guess in the end it is up to the team reps to do what is best for the players, here’s hoping they did just that, from a first look however, to me anyways, this has FAIL written all over it.

Methinks Cheli has been spending too much time with Laird Hamilton passing the peace pipe within their circle around the bonfire on the beach.
Either that or he had no idea what was going on before it was too late.
