Cherry Responds To Negative Remarks Aimed At Him

Don Cherry is not very impressed with neurologist Charles Tator. Approached on Sunday for comment about Tator’s claim that Cherry is a “negative influence” in the fight against head injuries, the star of Coach’s Corner dismissed Tator’s allegation with a series of profane remarks.
Tator was quoted as saying that Cherry’s embrace of rock ‘em, sock ‘em hockey on Hockey Night In Canada was an impediment to getting players to play safer.
Asked his response by a reporter outside radio studios in Toronto on Sunday, Cherry replied “I don’t give a [expletive] about him, I don’t give a [expletive] about him.”

Agreed Osrt, no biggie here. I don’t think Cherry even said anything offensive to anyone on this recording.

First off, I have been watching Don for 20 + years and while I don’t always agree with Don, I do enjoy watching him.
The doctor has a study, or maybe just an opinion about the stae of concusions in hockey. If the doctor simply releases the study or perhaps gets it published in a medical journal then maybe a few hundred or perhaps a thousand medical professionals see and read the study. Howvere, if the doctor manages to get Don’s name associated with the story? Well, now this paper gets serious media attention!
The ‘rock-em-sock-em series that Don’s company puts out is NOT an old school underground fight tape with blood gushing from noses and cuts. Hardly! The tapes highlight big hits and collisions which happen in almost every game played. Additionally , the tapes include highlight real goals and other plays.
Which brings me to the D-bag radio “reporter” “interviewing” Don on the tape. I guess any jackass flunky with a recorder is now considered media in this era of youtube and twitter????
This guy obviously is blindsiding Don in some bar,restaurant, or parking garage and he knows full well the kind of response he’s gonna get of Don and his recorder is ready to capture the whole thing.
Don may say some things that bother ot offend some people, but to suggest that he is somehow responsible for the contributing to the problem of head injuries in hockey because he enjoys a good body check or godd “scrap’ between willing partners, is CRAZY.
I remeber 10-12 years ago when Don,on his ‘Coaches Corner’ program displayed the type of hard plastic elbow pads and Football style shoulder pads the NHL was now allowing, and at the time Don said if the league doesn’t do something , there was going to be a problem. It’s now 2009 and nothing has changed.
Perhaps hockey needs to look in the mirror before blaming Don.

I’m not a fan of Grapes any more but he does routinely talk about hitting from behind and various parts of “the code.” And he has been advocating the softening of shoulder pads for nearly a decade now; it’s just now coming to fruition.
