Cherry Takes A Shot At Caps Owner

from Eric McErlain of AOL Fanhouse,
Cherry had already warmed up the viewing audience earlier in the segment when he jokingly referred to Calgary Flames center Oli Jokinen, a Finn, as a Russian—because after all, it’s impossible to tell those European players apart these days!
Next, in a move that will only reinforce Cherry’s reputation as a xenophobe, he mangled the Caps owner’s last name ("Legonsis"), before questioning his hockey judgment in light of the team’s decision to sign Jaromir Jagr to a long-term contract…

How is this ass still on TV?
Posted by Adam K on 03/08/09 at 11:06 AM ET
He is on TV because CBC has decided to build its ratings with xenophobic nationalism via hockey. My guess is the development of the ‘ugly Canadian’ will play out on the world stage next year at the Olympics in Vancouver.

And don’t forget he reference to maybe the best captain currently playing....he talked about Jarome Oginla. That’s right....OGINLA....rather than Iginla!
I’m getting kind of worried that the rest of the world is going to begin to view we Canadians as xenophobic idiots.
Don Cherry does represent a segment of our population....in the same way skinheads do....but it’s a minority that’s getting smaller everyday.

There’s as much or more xenophobia and bigotry coming from Adam Proteau of the hockey news and I never hear anything about it, mostly because he’s less relevant, though partially because it’s directed at a different target. At least Don Cherry’s entertaining, in a senile grandfather sort of way.
And it’s kind of hard not to laugh at somebody who identifies Olli Jokinen as “my favorite Russian” and refers to the Capitals owner as “Mr. Lougainis”.
And that’s laugh “at”, not “with”.

I don’t know of anyone who thinks that Don Cherry represents anything other than an ignorant but vocal (and probably pretty tiny) minority of Canadians. Anyone who thinks all Canadians are like that probably thinks all Americans are like Rush Limbaugh or something.

Yeah, I definitely don’t think all Canadians are like Cherry. But I also definitely understand why Canadian hockey fans might be concerned that they are lumped in with him. He’s a troll. And it’s just way to easy for people from the outside to say, “Cherry’s a troll, Cherry’s Canadian, therefore, all Canadian hockey fans are trolls.”
Let’s just hope that everyone keeps a clear head and realizes that Cherry is a one-off freak, kind of the Rush Limbaugh of Canadian hockey commentary.
