Cherry is a dinosaur. Back in the day when there was plenty of obstruction, poor ice, old heavy equipment and a guy’s idea of conditioning was to work the beer gut off in the first months of the season you might have allowed that kind of stuff. Hell, back then guys had that extra second to see it coming. But nowadays with officials calling obstruction and hooking (as well they should), with shoulder pads built of ultra hard, ultra light equipment… and with guys training all year round, those kind of hits are going to result in massive injuries.
Football dealt with its QB issues. It’s high time the NHL outlawed any hit above the shoulders. (Sorry Chara. Tough break pal. you’re going to have to aim low...)
Oh and Richards totally aimed for his head. He knew exactly what he was doing and when Booth walked into him he made him pay. Clean hit. But it was an intentional headshot.
