Chicago Politician Takes A Shot At Detroit

from the Chicago Sun-Times,
Cook County Commissioner Mike Quigley is a Blackhawks fan. It goes without saying he hates the Detroit Red Wings....
Besides declaring Jan. 1 will be ‘’Chicago Blackhawks Day’’ in Cook County, Quigley’s resolution designates Wrigley Field and the surrounding area an ‘’Octopus Free Zone’’—a dig at Red Wings fans’ tradition of throwing octopi on the ice after their team scores.
‘’The good thing about being a Blackhawks fan,’’ Quigley said, ‘’is you don’t have to live in Detroit.’’

The great thing about being a Detroit Red Wings fan who lives in Chicago is you can always get great seats at the UC because no one wants to see the Blackhawks.
Of course that looks like it’s about to change, but we had it good here for about ten or so years where we’d turn the UC into the Red Wings’ home away from home.
And someone should tell Quigley we don’t waste octopi for regular season games - those are strictly for the playoffs. I don’t know, maybe he doesn’t expect Chicago to make the playoffs…

man. that sh*t was clever. no one has said anything like that before.
I guess the even better thing about being a wings’ fan is that when you are watching your team win all of the time, it’s easy to forget about where you live.

That’s a misprint. I was there. He said:
“The good thing about being a Blackhawks fan is you don’t have expectations, so when they suck it hard it doesn’t matter.”
Or maybe he said:
“The good thing about being a Blackhawks fan is you don’t have to worry about being subjected to their futility on TV.”
Or maybe he said:
“The good thing about being a Blackhawks fan is you get to wear an openly racist logo on your chest and never be questioned for it.”
Or maybe it was:
“The good thing about being a Blackhawks fan is that our city completely burns down more often than our NHL club wins the championship.”
But it could’ve been:
“The good thing about being a Blackhawks fan is you get to see all your former players win with other teams.”
I don’t know, I was in the back, so it could’ve been anything.

He used red capital letters in the last line of his resolution to spell out a favorite chant he learned while growing up a Hawks fan “in the second balcony in Chicago Stadium.” The letters spelled out, “DETROIT SUCKS.”
I guess that removes any doubt that all politicians who come out of the Chicago area are better at running their mouths than they are at actually getting anything done.

He probably got elected due to the way Chicago elections are run: Vote early, vote often.

It hurts when someone talks bad about you, doesn’t it? Makes you want to fire back with jabs, doesn’t it?

It makes me hurt to laugh so hard at the fact that the Chicago politicians are as incompetent as they were when my grandparents were living there.
I mean, in an official resolution? Can you be any more immature without actually starting a food fight in the middle school cafeteria? How pathetically childish.

While I had my fun making fun of the Blackhawks in my earlier comment, I would like to caution my fellow Wings fans when it comes to trashing Chicago’s politicians… I mean, look at what Detroit has…

True, but Chicago’s history as a “Windy City” is much longer. And how many jokes are there about people wanting to be buried in a Chicgo cemetary so they can remain politically active in the afterlife?
Kwame is doing his best, but I think Detroit still has a little catching up to do in the political corruption-slash-incompetence department.
Politicians being politicians, though, and therefore sleazy by definition, I have no doubt that both cities will continue to shaft their citizens at every opportunity.

Do we have this commissioner to thank for our new 10.25% sales tax? I’m glad to see this is what my tax dollars are being used for.

Kwame is way worse than (the current) Mayor Daly. And if you think dead people aren’t voting in Detroit, you’re smoking something. Baroque, you’re great, but Kwame may be the worst Mayor in America today.
Also, am I sensing some Obama hating going on here? Because he’s not actually from Chicago...he’s from Hawai’indonesiansas.
Anyway, its idiots like Quigley that make being a Wings fan so fun because the Wings will beat the feces out of the Hawks this year. The Blackhawks will suck next year--Dave Tallon hasn’t mastered the art of addition since they are over the cap right now, and he paid WAY too much for Campbell and Huet. They are a disaster waiting to continue.

Don’t think so. You might be reading something into it.
Actually, I don’t currently live in either place and try very hard to ignore politics, but Kwame is the most horriblest of all in the mayoral category, for sure.

Y’all consider Kilpatrick worse that DC Mayor Marion Barry?

Well, this will make a victory on that day all the more worthwhile.
Put Draper on Lang just to make sure he doesn’t come out with some heroics because of all the cameras.

Thanks for the nice words, John from Austin, TX. I will have you know that I FINALLY got my car back. Turned out that Chrysler tried to cut their suppliers rates 3% again, and the supplier that made the strut mount (no aftermarket available) said, “No”. And that meant me without a car for three weeks while they came to an agreement.

SYF - in fairness, I don’t believe Marion Barry spent $9 million in taxpayer money in lawsuit settlements, plus who knows how many more hundreds of thousands on legal fees.

I would be really impressed if someone managed to land an octopus on the ice at Wrigley. The Cubs might have to sign him, and then pay for his inevitable and repeated arm injuries.

Cut us Hawks fans some slack. Our gloating is a little rusty.
