Chicago Trying To Move Huet

from Tim Sassone of Between The Circles at the Chicago Daily-Herald,

It was clear late Tuesday night that Hawks GM Dale Tallon hoped to re-sign both Martin Havlat and Nikolai Khabibulin before they became unrestricted free agents at noon on Wednesday.

The serious interest in bringing back Khabibulin was a pretty strong indicator that Tallon was actively trying to trade goalie Cristobal Huet and the three years and more than $16 million he has left on his contract.

Two teams that need goaltenders – Edmonton and Colorado – were believed to be at least listening to what Tallon was offering. Could defenseman Cam Barker be part of a package with Huet? The Oilers are believed to have some interest in Barker.

Edmonton?  You mean the three-headed monster that forced Garon to go the Pen(i)s is now in need of ANOTHER goalie?  That baffles me about as much as Chicago over-paying for yet another goalie and then trying to deal him a year later.  Good lord, I hope they do move Huet and then The Boulin wall tells them to @#$% off leaving them with their farm system goalies only.

Dale Tallon has done a lot of things right, but I think he would like to take the Campbell and Huet contracts back. A combined $12.765M cap hit that could have been put to better use.

Huet may be overpriced, but he isn’t horrible.  It might make more sense to stick with him and an inexpensive backup/platoon option and let Khabibulin walk - at least see how that works out for a year.

If Huet plays well, then you are better off.

I wonder if the year will come when Edmonton ever doesn’t need a goalie.  It seems to be perpetual.  Conklin is available.  smile
