Clarke Approves of Downie’s Actions

From TSN,

More fuel was thrown on the fire regarding Steve Downie’s sucker punch on Wednesday, with Philadelphia Flyers Senior Vice President Bob Clarke holding the gas can.

Clarke, who selected Downie 29th overall in the 2005 Entry Draft, told TSN’s Off The Record that he enjoyed watching the rookie forward go after Toronto Maple Leafs winger Jason Blake.

“When he went after Blake, I loved it,” Clarke told TSN.

note: GM Paul Holmgren was a bit less understanding the other day.

Update 4:30pm ET: From the Globe & Mail,

After the Leafs’ morning skate Wednesday morning, Blake said brushed aside Clarke’s comments and repeated what he said about Downie a day earlier. “I don’t care who it is, but in the over-all picture, there’s no place for [those hits],” he said. “You don’t want injuries that will keep you out for the whole season. I’m just thankful there was no structural damage.” Leafs head coach Paul Maurice put Clarke’s comments down to sticking up for one of his players. “That’s what it’s all about,” Maurice said. “Whether you’re a player or in the office, you take care of your own.”

Since Bobby Clarke is a VP with the Flyers should the organization that is on double secret probation be sanctioned for his ill-timed comments?  I’m sure the fines would be fast and heavy if it were somehting detrimental to the game like talking out of line during the lockout.

Clarke has always been a tough guy, just look at the way he challenged Kharlamov and dropped the gloves and put a good beating on the guy man-to-man. What’s that? He broke his ankle with a slash from behind…. never mind.

While Clarke’s attitude (unfortunately) comes as no surprise, it’s somewhat odd that he would share it publicly. No less a dinosaur than Grapes himself proclaimed it a cheap shot.

God Bless Bobby Clarke

I think Clarke made these to speak for the orgization and for Paul Holmgren. i only think Paul Holmgren is made about the breaking the code.

how about our boy downie?

2 goals in 2 games

that was a nice goal he scored last night

That struck me as odd, too.  Something like that seems to be a thought you would keep to yourself and snicker quietly at your good fortune at getting such a gritty player when all teh other namby-pamby GMs didn’t have the guts to overlook his previous history.

I was more on the lines of, “Hurry and get out, Downie!  Clarke’s pulling a Lindros act on you!  Get out!!!”

Hey everyone, free punches to the face of Bobby Clarke for anyone that meets him. By his own logic anytime anyone says something that you think is stupid you should sucker punch them. Guess that means he’s got a lifetime of head shots coming.
