Coach Tippett Answers Questions

Transcript from a press conference with Dallas Stars coach Dave Tippett:

Q. What’s your off-day skate looking like? A lot of coaching going on there?

COACH DAVE TIPPETT: That’s what happens when we didn’t get a lot of time between the last series and this one. We felt we had a few things we wanted to address out there. Not a strenuous day, but certainly some things we want to look at that we have to be better at.

Q. What’s the best way for your guys to get Holmstrom and Franzen out of the way within the rules?

COACH DAVE TIPPETT: Well, there’s a lot of different situations. Our goaltender has to battle harder to get us space. Obviously, if they’re going to be allowed to stand in the paint, then we have to battle harder to push them out. Simple as that.

Q. Do we know anything about Barnes? Is he a possible player? Is it a game-time decision? Is he a lot better?

COACH DAVE TIPPETT: It’s day-to-day. He looked better out there. We’ll evaluate him in the morning.

Q. How about Fistric and Niskanen, is that a change you might make?

COACH DAVE TIPPETT: We’ll visit that tomorrow.

Q. Having a chance to see this game on tape again, any reflections on that, or is it pretty much what you thought last night?

COACH DAVE TIPPETT: No, we have to skate. Whether it was fatigue, whatever it was, we just didn’t skate to the level we need to to be successful.

We can talk about all the other things we want. But until we get moving and get the tempo that we have to get to, all the other stuff is secondary.

Q. Is it hard when they start out with the puck? They do a lot of things right. They win faceoffs and they get the puck in areas they want to. Almost as if you have to chase them to get it back.

COACH DAVE TIPPETT: When your top three centermen are all 30 percent in the draws, you’re chasing a lot from right there. So it’s a good place to start. It comes down to execution. You have to be able to do things with the puck. Recognize when they have it, you have to check well and get it back. That’s common sense hockey right there.

What a load of crap.

Forgot to add…

Who wants to bet that we start seeing phantom goaltender interference calls on the Wings now?

Geez, they’re already lining up their excuses. “Boo hoo. We only had three days off before playing Game 1.” “Boo hoo. Our centers suck at faceoffs.” “Boo hoo. Homer was in the paint.”

Well, okay, he’s right on that last one. But that wasn’t why you lost, Dave. You lost because your guys couldn’t finish off a pathetic Sharks team after you had them down three games to none...and because your goalie wets himself every time he skates onto the ice at the Joe.

But, hey, there’s alway next year. I’m sure Fabian will be a real difference-maker for you. wink
