“Color” Man

from the Detroit Free Press,
Watching Redmond, known for colorful “Mickeyisms”—pearls of wisdom such as “Bingo Bango!” and “Like a lumberjack fighting for the last pork chop!”—at a game in the cramped FSN booth, high above the ice at Joe Louis Arena, is priceless.
Just as the game came easily to Redmond—he had back-to-back 50-goal seasons in 1972-73 and 1973-74 for the Wings—it comes just as effortlessly for him at the microphone, where he has worked as a broadcaster since 1979….
Daniels is already in the booth, making sure the equipment is working, when we arrive. I try to keep clear of monitors and wires. Redmond takes off his dark blue sports jacket and loosens his tie. Game on.
Redmond doesn’t sit during a game—he leans on the bench, one eye on a small TV screen to his left and the other on the game. Daniels prefers the stool. They work together like frequent linemates Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk.
“I always feel confident with Mick in the booth,” Daniels says. “He’s great to play off. I can throw him anything and he’ll play off it.”

As I don’t get the Wings FSN broadcast here in Las Vegas, NV, I’m relegated to hearing Jim Fox and Bob Miller of FSN West. Once in a while, I’ll go to the casinos to catch the FSN Detroit broadcasts but those are far and few in between as they spend more time and tv space for NBA and College basketball. Hell, they spend more TV space for WSOP! WTF?
Anyway, I think I can kindly disagree with the statement that Redmond’s ability to dissect the game is without peer. I offer Jim Fox. The guy is amazing and the best part? He’s a Kings guy but when something great or subtle that led to something great happens for the opposition, he will not hesitate to point it out and see where the Kings lacked the coverage or effort. Quite simply THE best color analyst NO ONE knows about.

I offer Jim Fox
Fox is okay. His insight is fine, but he needs to tone down his delivery. For somebody who’s been doing this for what, fifteen(?) years, he comes across like an over-eager, excitable puppy. And I don’t think he and Bob Miller mesh particularly well, despite the length of time they’ve been working together.
Of the local-broadcast color guys I listen to regularly (mostly from the West), I’d rate Mick second only to the incomparable Daryl Reaugh. Not sure who I’d put third, either Drew Remenda or Eddie Olczyk.
For worst, Peter McNab takes the cake. Bernie Federko and Terry Crisp round out the bottom three. Brian Hayward gets (dis)honorable mention.

It’s a damn shame Mickey isn’t able to make the long trips because listening to Larry Murphy is like listening to fingernails scraping a blackboard. Sure, Mick gets a little carried away sometimes with his silliness, but his insights into the game are always refreshingly honest. He does in hockey what Johnny Miller does in golf – he tells it like it is…no holds barred.
With Larry “Let-Me-Gesture-Meaningfully” Murphy in the booth tonight, I’m gonna have to indulge in a few extra “ginger-ales” in order to really enjoy the game. Man, I hate it when I have to do that.
