Columbus Could Be Bound For The Playoffs

from Stan Fischler at the Hockey Journal,

Scott Howson’s Blue Jackets haven’t created any major headlines lately but the ex- Oilers aide may be putting together the NHL’s sleeper team of 2008-09. There may not be an All-Star among the roster additions but there’s plenty of substance. Between R.J. Umberger, Kris Huselius, Raffi Torres, Mike Commodore, Fedor Tyutin and Chris Backman, Columbus has a neat nucleus with which Ken Hitchcock can work. If Pascal Leclaire matures as a No. 1 goalie and Russian whiz Nikita Filatov lives up to his notices, the pieces for a playoff team will be in place.

Fischler, huh?

Why do I suddenly feel like I’ve been given the kiss of death ...?

Not an All-Star among the roster?  Ever heard of Rick “Nasty” Nash scoring the goal of the year this year against Phoenix and tying for the Rocket Richard trophy a couple years back?  How can you even talk about Columbus without mentioning his name?  If the Jackets are do make the playoffs this year, it will because they finally surrounded this guy with the proper support.

Don’t blame Stan.  It’s all those darn foreign names that are so hard to pronounce.  He got all confused.  smile

To be fair he did say “An all-star amongst the roster ADDITIONS”, read it again.

I don’t think CBS thinks playoffs this year.  I don’t see anyone in the additions that make them any more fearsome.  Huselius… Commodore… Umberger?  Really?

They’ll be a little more of a pain to play against, but barring someone unforseen emerging they still don’t have enough depth or firepower, plain and simple.  The blueline has a little more depth but is still weak, and at some point it’s still going to boil down to Nash scoring yet again… and they never did add a Center for him so meh, I don’t see this year being any bigger for him either.

At this point in the season, isn’t the chance of making the playoffs the same for every team? Nevermind how much a team sucked last year, or what additions a team made this off-season. As far as I can tell, every team is on equal footing right now.
