Columbus Looking Like A Hitchcock Team

from Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch,
The Blue Jackets’ summer of significant change has made the club bigger, stronger, faster and nastier.
One word might sum it up: Hitchcockian.
From the day Scott Howson was hired as general manager more than a year ago, it was obvious he saw his dream hockey club through the same lens as coach Ken Hitchcock.
“We’re on the same page,” Howson said. “We have the same opinion on how you build a hockey club.”
Then we have a complaint from a Dispatch reader,
Mr. Stein: You people continue to show your financial interest in the Blue Jackets.
Do you really believe the sports masses in central Ohio are interested in names of hockey players, whom most of us could not pronounce, in a two-page spread (last Sunday)? Yawn. Also, there was an inordinate amount of space dedicated to the NHL draft when not too many folks are interested.

You know one of my biggest pet peeves of people who try to sound all cool and intelligent?
When they actually type out “yawn”. Good god that gets under my skin; especially now with this smarmy little twit in today’s Letter’s to the Editor.
Good thing Ray Stein responded to this person in a proper manner.

Yep Michael, as they say, if you don’t like the coverage, don’t read it.

Yeah I mentioned in here a couple of days ago that Hitchcock will make this team competitive. He’s always been successful and believes in his methods. This will be a team this year that will be more abrasive and tougher to play against, even if probably not yet poised for a long playoff run.

That letter is typical of sports “fans” in central Ohio-if it’s not Ohio State football all day every day, they complain. I’m a big Buckeyes fan, but I enjoy other sports as well. As for Howson’s and Hitch’s plan, I like it. Whatever plan there was before this, and I don’t think there was, that didn’t work. Something had to change, and I think this change is for the better.

I spend approximately 78% of my personal sports time on hockey, and absolutely zero on college football… I am so out of touch with the Ohio sports market.
I’d rather watch a Crunch or Jackets game over a Big 10 game anytime. Especially a Crunch game.

So, this reader can’t pronounce “Rick Nash?”
That is so, so sad.

Well they Jackets added Commodore, Tyutin, and Backman to last year’s team minus Ron Hainsey. As they have more than replaced Zherdev and Fritsche, with Huselius, Torres, and Umberger. Now if only Voracek, Brassard, and Filatov can develop as expected they could be a force.

The strategy of the Blue Jackets’ management makes quite a contrast to the (plan?) for the Canucks....
