via Puck-rakers,
Goaltender Pascal Leclaire has signed a three-year contract worth $11.4 million with the Blue Jackets, The Dispatch has learned.
The deal will pay Leclaire $3 million this season, $3.6 million in 2009-10 and $4.8 million in 2010-11.
added 5:22pm, from the Columbus Blue Jackets,
“We’re very happy to have signed Pascal to a new contract that will keep him with the Blue Jackets for the next three seasons,” said Howson. “He is an important part of our team and we think he will continue to improve and play a significant role in helping us reach our goals.”

Three years from now, it’ll be interesting to see who was the better bargain: 29-year-old Laclaire at $3.8M/year or 27-year-old Jimmy Howard at $717k/year. Still not sure how Holland got Howard signed for less than a million a year. Ken the Magician strikes again, I guess.

You mean he STARTS at $3mil?
I hope Rick Nash is paying attention. There’s a town about 200 miles north that would love to take him in at the end of his contract. Ok, so that’s my personal pipe dream. But this signing is pretty foolish. I like the guy, but 9 shutouts or not, he’s not good enough to carry Columbus into the playoffs.

You know, it’s funny the only one’s who are complaining are the Red Wings fans. I love you guys but really, it’s a good signing...and a good price (look at Theodore’s contract), and a great term...and I guess we’ll find out next season if he’s good enough to take us into the playoffs.

I think the reason people are questioning this deal, Bethany, is because Leclaire has only played in 113 NHL games...with half of those coming last year. And, until last year, he wasn’t exactly a top-flight goaltender. As George put it: “That’s a helluva ‘paying for potential’ deal…”
But, as you say, we’ll know better next spring whether this was a good deal or a foolish move. In the meantime, I think you can expect a lot of people to remain skeptical.
