Here’s the Coyotes’ press release:
GLENDALE, ARIZONA – Phoenix Coyotes General Manager Don Maloney announced today that the Coyotes have acquired center Antoine Vermette (AN-twuhn, vuhr-MEHT) from the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for a second-round draft choice in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft (acquired from Ottawa), a fifth-round draft choice in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft and goaltender Curtis McElhinney.
“We are extremely pleased to acquire Antoine,” Maloney said. “He is a smart, skilled, two-way center who will be a great addition to our lineup.”
The 6-foot-1, 198-pound Vermette has recorded 8-19-27 in 60 games this season for the Blue Jackets. In 600 career NHL games with Columbus and the Ottawa Senators he has posted 141-178-319.

Phoenix is on a predetermined budget and has made a handful of trades or waiver additions so far this season. Hardly worth the aggravation.

Yotes just got stronger in the centerman position.

I’m starting to think Nash stays everyone else goes.

I think it’s an overreaction to call PHX a winner right yet. Vermette has not been so great the past couple of seasons, and honestly I don’t see what hole he fills on the PHX roster.

Phoenix has needed another center all season. With Kyle Turris not working out (that second round pick was part of Ottawa’s deal for him), they have Hanzal, Gordon, Lankow, and Chipchura. Depth after that is pretty inexperienced, They have Andy Miele, but he hasn’t been called back up since November. Marc-Antoine Pouliot hasn’t been back up either. Chipchura wont lose his roster spot though, He’ll probably be slid over to wing until Taylor Pyatt returns.
With all the injuries, I honestly see them in the market for a defenseman, but GMDM said he likes the team, and chemistry, and doesn’t want to take a roster player from the mix.
They we’re at the 50 contract limit, that’s why Curtis McElhinney had to go.

At this rate of salary acquisition by the NHL coyotes, Nashville fans probably wish the league owned their team as well.
