Columbus Writer Gets ‘Thrashed’

from Bill Tiller of Ice Man at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution,

By now many of you have already seen, read and even commented on this little ditty that was posted by Aaron Portzline of The Columbus Dispatch. Basically, it’s a “look ahead” towards the future of the Atlanta Thrashers’ organization, something he’s in the process of doing so for all NHL teams. Well, I thought I’d simply say this about that.

Now, before we go too far into what he has to say, someone really needs to clue Mr. Portzline in on the fact that Marty Reasoner was re-signed almost two weeks ago. That, plus I don’t believe anyone expects Eric Perrin to re-sign here given his comments at the trade deadline.

I guess a little research would have gone a long way here, don’t-cha-think?

Consistency doesn’t seem to be a big priority with Aaron either. At one point he opines, “Kovalchuk is clearly the star here”… (DUH5)…”but he has one year remaining on his contract with the Thrashers and it’s looking highly unlikely that he’ll re-sign”. However, you don’t have to read too much further down the article before you come across this…”If they spend money on free agents and build a respectable club, he might be willing to stick around”.

It’s hard to dig too deep into the Thrashers organization when the mainstream media doesn’t cover minor league hockey.

A point could be made by combining the two statements you chose to quote regarding Kovalchuk.  He might stay if your team is able to build a team around him, but if history is any indication, that won’t happen and he’ll bolt like Hossa did.  This is a team that signed Ron Hainsey to a deal worth $4.5 million a year.  Porty’s points were not contradictory.  He was presenting a scenario in which Ilya considers staying in Atlanta, but presents the reality that he’ll leave when nothing changes in the win column.

I see you had no problem with the following quotes:
- “the Atlanta Thrashers’ roster is cringe worthy.”
- “the people in charge of the Thrashers might be even less impressive.”
- “The GM, Don Waddell, is stuck in lame duck status, surrounded by the mess he’s created as the roster’s caretaker since Day 1 of the franchise.
- “Coach John Anderson is an underwhelming presence on the bench and in the dressing room, not nearly a strong enough personality to get Kovalchuk to play within a team concept.”
- “there are deep, deep problems with this organization, and they won’t be solved overnight.  One might say the franchise is at a crossroads. At this point, why would anybody expect them to pick the right direction to turn next?”
- “Atlanta is one of the country’s worst sports cities. Until the Thrashers win – and win consistently – they’ll barely register much interest on the local scene.”
- “Sadly, the situation on the ice is such that it’s hard to imagine a quick turn-around. The Thrashers could be a bottom five team in the Eastern Conference for the next two seasons at least.”

So yeah, try and discredit the article by picking apart a couple of minor details on a brief rundown of your crappy team on a Columbus blog written by a beat writer than doesn’t typically focus on other teams, especially ones as insignificant at the Atlanta Thrashers.

Nice to see Portzline’s brother come to his defense. Hey slick, the Jackets have as many playoff appearences and wins as Atlanta. Enjoy the great disappearing Jason Williams. Maybe he will develop a spine for the first time in his career.

Hey Bluto…

There is a difference between the Atlanta playoff appearance the Columbus playoff appearance.  Columbus didnt buy it’s way into the playoffs and mortgage the farm doing so…the CBJ built it’s way into the playoffs.  That is why they will be there next year..unlike that debacle in Atlanta.

Who cares about Williams? Short term rental player. By the way, Bluto (Or should that be, Butthole?), the Jackets have a lot more talented, young players coming up. Do the names Mason, Brassard, Voracek, Filatov, Mayorov or Picard mean anything to you? I prefer our odds of returning to the play-offs next year to Atlanta’s. Come to think of it, when was the last time any Atlanta professional sports team won a championship?
