Come Tryout Shanny

from Larry Brooks of the NY Post,

...the Rangers have invited free agent Brendan Shanahan to training camp on a tryout basis, The Post has learned. Hoping for a guaranteed contract, the winger who only wants to continue his NHL career wearing the Blueshirt, has thus far refused the offer.

“Brendan is welcome; I’ve told him that before and I’m going to call him again to make sure he knows that,” GM Glen Sather said yesterday. “I’m not in a position to offer a contract at this time, but that does not mean it can’t happen or won’t happen after we evaluate what we have here.”

I think it is ridiculous to offer a player of Shanahan’s caliber (he still has plenty left in the tank) a tryout for the Rangers.  Shanahan is a future hall of famer who has helped every team he has ever played for.  He expresses his interest to only play with the Rangers and they thank him with a slap in the face like this.  I know that other teams have put offers in front of him, I think he should take them up on it, or at least give it more consideration after being treated this way by the Blue Shirts.

I agree Drew.  The Selanne situation is he knows he will be signed, just a matter of some salary shuffling.  But with Shanny, that is not the case.

Yea, that’s no way to go out. I’m confident he’ll get a spot though.

He’d be a good fit in Chicago with the young guns, if only they could afford to bring him in.
