Coming To The Aid Of Heatley

from Wayne Scanlan of the Ottawa Citizen,

Tom Molloy, an international hockey coach and former neighbour of the Heatleys, says the one-sided Heatley bashing from fans and media has been difficult for the family.

Dany’s parents (Murray and Karin) dropped over to our place the other day,” Molloy said by telephone from Calgary. “They said, ‘Everyone is crucifying Dany.’ His mother is very upset. And the attacks are all personal stuff, about his character. Nobody mentions that this is a guy who gives up a month of his summer every year to play for Team Canada.”

Molloy wrote a letter to The Citizen sports department because the Heatleys told him they didn’t have “a forum” to express the other side of the story....

Molloy’s letter to the newspaper began this way:

“I can’t express how disappointed I am in the press and hockey fans concerning Dany Heatley’s request to be traded. I was talking with his parents ... and they can’t believe the awful things that people are saying about Dany. He simply wants to play on a team that believes in his abilities.

“The new coach (Cory Clouston) has decided that Dany is a second- or third-line player, uses him on the second power play and plays him 14 minutes a game.

He makes it sound like a chore, isn’t this an honor for a player?

Maybe he shouldn’t have killed a guy by being a complete idiot..............

What planet do they live on ? Do they really expect fans to react well when he asks to leave their team ?

A phrase comes immediately to mind:

“You shit your bed, now lay in it.”

The parents, while it’s understandable they are upset, should not take things too personally. It is Dany’s actions - past and present - that have spurred the ire of hockey fans across North America. Dany did this to himself.

I was talking with his parents ... and they can’t believe the awful things that people are saying about Dany.

They can’t believe them?  They’re all true.  He’s immature, selfish, irresponsible, a bad teammate, and his immaturity and selfishness literally killed someone—as in took their life.

Dany got one more chance than he should have—a second chance being moved out of Atlanta.  That he did not make the most of it speaks volumes that he hasn’t learned a lesson and never will.

“The new coach (Cory Clouston) has decided that Dany is a second- or third-line player, uses him on the second power play and plays him 14 minutes a game.

He’s not a leader, doesn’t play defense to save his life half the time, and is mercurial offensively.  Sounds like about the right time for such a player—or maybe even a bit too much.

Good to know Dany’s whining and immaturity are genetic though.

I’ll admit that I don’t follow the Sens closely, but I haven’t heard anything about him whining.

I’ve heard that he’s unhappy on the second line (and really, when you’ve been playing first line for so long, who would be happy being demoted?  But that’s neither here nor there), but whining?  Immaturity?  I would’ve assumed that all that would have come out a long time ago, with the way that so much negativity poured out of Ottawa regarding Ray Emery.  I would think that if he was such a problem, Murray would’ve tried to move him on his own, before Heatley asked for a trade.

But then again, I’m not neccesarily a Murray supporter and, like I said, I don’t follow Ottawa, I just enjoy any time there’s turmoil surrounding a team so poorly run.

Call me crazy, but it seems there might have been another course of action rather than pouting and demanding a trade…

like working his butt off to prove to Clouston that he deserves 1st line minutes and PP time.

Nah…

Not sure what you would call it when a player is unhappy with his coach, states as much to the coach, then comes back after a trip to the worlds and a vacation to demand a trade.

He’s whining about being treated like a third liner after having acted like one, and the immaturity comes with his not being able to handle adversity very well.

Dany is a good player, but he has a striking lack of class and commitment to an organization. Don’t look for teams bidding for his services, because you won’t find very many who are willing to take a chance on someone who has now demanded trades twice in the past five years.

You know what?  You’re right.  When I read the comment, I read it more literally than you probably meant.  I thought you were actually commenting on some rumour about him.

My bad.

Hockey fans must be the whiniest, most hate mongering and grudge-bearing individuals in all of sports. Every transgression is remembered like it was committed yesterday. Even elephants would suffer from envy exposed to this kind of recollection.

I don’t know Heatley, personally, so I’ll refrain from judging his character. A few people should heed that example, or take a few looks in the mirror. If it wasn’t for his cap hit, I would like to see Heatley in a Penguins jersey tomorrow regardless of pre-history.

That’s because we don’t cheer for gun-toting, line-sniffing, girlfriend-beating losers like fans of baseball, football, and basketball all do.  We expect MORE and better out of our players.

And I for one will NOT apologize for refusing to stoop to the lack-of-standards blinders that exist with fans of those other sports.

40-goal scorer Marian Hossa was on the Wings SECOND PP unit.  Did you ever hear him friggin’ complaining?

Whenever a famous family member or friend is getting ripped by the public, ther best way to deal with it is to ignore the press entirely.  No matter what kind of forum the parents have, or how solid their arguments, it will never help.

Just ignore it as best you can and wait until the situation is resolved one way or another.  It’s not comfortable, but it’s the only way to minimize the stress.
