Concussion Conference

Hockey’s most under-reported injury will be the focus of an open and frank discussion featuring Eric Lindros, Jeff Beukeboom and other former pro hockey players whose careers were plagued by concussions.
The incidence and treatment of the injury at the youth level is a big item on the agenda, with doctors, coaches and trainers all speaking on the issue at the inaugural London Hockey Concussion Summit, set for Jan. 17 in London, Ont.
“I don’t think anybody else has seen such a group of experts and professional hockey players get together and talk about this in an open matter, which is what it needs,” says summit chair, Dr. Paul Echlin, a junior hockey doctor who practices sports medicine in London.

Organizers of the London conference are critical of current standards in concussion evaluation and prevention and openly admit to not knowing much about concussion or its origin. NO helmet will make a difference, Dr.Robert Cantu said of Bergeron’s concussion, 99% of players struck like Bergeron was in the jaw would have been KO’d. Neuro testing is not enough, an identifiable condition in the jaw joint has shown promise in pinpointing the reason some players become prone to recurrent concussion. A recent FIFA and UPMC paper outlines the use of this protocol in high school players who are fit with a corrective orthodic mouth guard. The reduction in players with multiple “events” is very promising, yet it’s not part of the London conference. This is why there is no change in concussion rates, until there is a mandate of this protocol, concussion rates will remain the same. http://www.mahercor.com. Used by the N.E. Patriots for over two decades, the Maher mouth guard has resulted in the lowest concussion rates in the NFL year in and year out.
