Cooke Hit On Cole

from Luke DeCock of the News & Observer,
The Hurricanes lost Erik Cole midway through the third period after Pittsburgh’s Matt Cooke caught him knee-on-knee in front of the Pittsburgh net. Cole played only one shift after that, and an angry Paul Maurice wasn’t happy about the hit afterward.
Asked if he thought it was a knee-on-knee hit, with the implication that it was an illegal one, a curt Maurice said, “Yes, I did. I felt that was, yeah.”
Cole officially has a “lower body” injury, but he clearly hurt his left knee in the collision. Cooke said the contact was accidental.
“He was cutting across the middle,” Cooke said. “I turned sideways to hit him, and he turned the other way. I almost fell over, too.”
continued and watch the hit (1:15 mark) within the video highlights below…

That, Pens fans, is what a dirty knee on knee hit looks like.
Use it for reference when you have future questions about such matters.

Cooke is a cheapshot artist....but I’m glad it happened. Cole runs at goalies all the time. Ruutu is a scumbag so that’s another bonus as far as I’m concerned.

If Ovechkin didn’t even get a fine for his on Gonchar, Cooke shouldn’t get anything either. If he gets suspended, the NHL is a joke.

Look at the Wings fans come out of the woodwork to say something bad about the Pens!
You guys are the best!

I’m pulling for the Pens but I thought that was dirty the minute I saw it.

Wow. This looks similar to some of the other Cooke hits I’ve seen in the past couple years.
Look at the Wings fans come out of the woodwork to say something bad about the Pens!
I’m just wondering when all the Pens fans are going to regroup and say this was a clean, shoulder to shoulder hit.
Stay classy!

I thought the Ovechkin play was reckless, but not necessarily dirty. Reckless behavior used to be one of the things that players policed themselves through retribution, but that doesn’t happen anymore. The Cooke hit was dirty, cheap and suspendable. It also puts his own players in jeopardy of retaliation. If that hit was Ruutu on Malkin, we’d be going crazy.

Cole should keep his head up, plain and simple. Anybody who feels otherwise should switch to watching baseball.

Drilling him in the chest is keep your head up. Sticking your leg out like a f-ing pansy is cowardly. Good comment full of deep thought though, auxlepil.

Sure it was dirty, but he wasn’t suspended for his hit on Bogosian, Ovechkin wasn’t suspended for his hit on Gonchar, and Cooke won’t be suspended for this.
They all should have been, but since when is it the NHL’s policy to do the right thing?
