Cornwall vs Smithers - A Hockeyville Showdown for Blogger Bragging Rights

By KK Members Robert L (with Zanstorm)

Call it an ironic, yet sweet coincidence!

Two big-time hockey fans, almost at opposite ends of the country, living in small towns, and running daily hockey blogs with all the passion of the sport, both entrenched in a battle for supremacy in the Kraft Hockeyville competition.

It’s Zanstorm of Waiting For Stanley in Smithers, B.C., up against Robert L (formerly Reality Check) at Eyes On The Prize, in Cornwall, Ontario.

Both bloggers feels their towns worthy of the title.

The irony is that the two bloggers both started their sites near the summer of 2006, and quickly became each others first regular visitors. Zanstorm covers the Canucks, Maple Leafs, and NHL goings on, while Robert has his site set on the Montreal Canadiens and Stanley Cup facts and fun.

Of course, good natured jibes have been the norm between the two since almost day one.

Now we’ll see, with the Hockeyville prize at stake, which blogger will have the bragging rights to the Hockeyville crown.

While Zanstorm believes Smithers second crack at the top 5, the area’s beautiful landscape, and the town’s propensity for providing the NHL with players ( 9 in all ) for a town of it’s size, should give it the nod over Cornwall and the three other competing bids. He mentions former Flyers brothers Jim and Watson, along with Predators Dan Hamhuis as the town’s proudest hockey citizens.

Robert L focuses on the small city’s penchant for youth hockey, an NHL ancestry consisting of Newsy Lalonde, Cy Denneny, and Chad Kilger (whose father is Mayor of Cornwall), and winners that includes Stanley Cup champions, the Memorial Cups, Olympic Gold medalists, and even pond hockey bragging rights, ought to bag the honours for Cornwall.

Noelville and North Bay, Ontario, and Warner, Alberta round out the final 5.

While Zanstorm admits that Smithers is taking on a city ten times it’s size, Robert L is a little weary that while Cornwall has the goods, the natural settings for hockey in the B.C. hills will be the Seaway City’s undoing.

Tilting the odds closer is the fact that many B.C. area bloggers, such as Joe Pelletier at Legends of Hockey Network, have also thrown their support behind the west coast bid. Robert L is the only known blogger backing Cornwall.

The winner will be announced during Saturday night’s HNIC telecast on CBC. Expect some interesting coverage from either should one of their town’s take the coveted prize.

With 10,000 people out of work, with nothing better to do all day than click “Vote”, Smithers might as well surrender now! We got Mom Watson outnumbered!

With the ghost of Newsy Lalonde on our side, we got the Hockeyville thing bagged.

If we don’t win this, I’d be surprised and disappointed, but like Smithers, we’d be right back at it next year.

Smithers sounds like a great place - if we fail, I’m cheering for ya’s all the way.

Best of Luck!

10,000 people out of work? Yeesh. Maybe they’ll be too drunk to vote…
