Craig Rivet Traded from the Sharks to the Sabres

From Phil Coffey at NHL.com:

The Buffalo Sabres acquired veteran defenseman Craig Rivet from the San Jose Sharks on Friday.

The Sharks sent the 33-year-old veteran and a seventh-round selection in the 2010 Entry Draft to the Sabres in exchange for second-round selections in the 2009 and 2010 Drafts.

Rivet will help the Sabres replace Dmitri Kalinin, who signed with the New York Rangers on Thursday.

Update 5:10pm ET: Comment from Sabres GM Darcy Regier, via press release --

“We are very excited to add such a quality veteran player to our roster.  He is a great character player that will provide our club added leadership and experience.”

I can’t freakin’ believe this!  They trade two promising defenseman (one of which had a bad year) for an injury prone player and then they get rid of one of the top leaders on their team.  What the hell are they thinking?

I figured they were just starting to get their defense gelled and then they scrap the whole team.

Especially after Wilson was estactic to get Rivet last year, they go and trade him away for more draft picks that they traded away for Boyle anyways.  The only thing that can save my respect for Wilson is if Rivet had requested the trade and that doesn’t seem like it was the case.  He was my favorite defenseman on that team.  They should have done away with Ehrhoff before getting rid of Rivet.

I don’t know how they can say salary cap because they only had around 35 million set for players before July 1st.  So now we have six NHL-ready defenseman, two of which are injury prone (McLaren and Boyle).  I’m sure Wilson isn’t done but throwing a nuke into the entire defense is a mistake.

I’m hoping Wilson can prove my rant is a hot air balloon full of rage but I don’t see it happening.  I’m mostly just mad because our future has been wrecked but I guess they can’t wait several more years to develop players.  People expect them to win the CUP now and I guess that’s what he’s doing.  I just don’t want Wilson saying salary cap when that’s not the case.

My rant’s done.  I just needed to get this off my chest.  It’s probably a bunch of hot air (or the amount of coffee I’ve had today).  I’ll miss Rivet but sometimes change hurts…
