Credit Goes To Ducks GM

from Curtis Zupke of Ducks Blog at the OC Register,
Bob Murray inherited a lot of responsibility when he stepped into Brian Burke’s general manager shoes last November.
He also inherited a mess.
Already a key member of the organization’s brain trust, Murray was given the reins to a club that had established a winning culture and is expected to maintain it in the mad salary cap era.
To that end, Murray has largely steered the Ducks out of the financial handcuffs that Burke had placed on them in order to get the Stanley Cup in 2007.
The Ducks will enter the 2009-10 season with breathing room in the salary cap, unlike in years past where tight numbers resulted in the sacrificial player movement that saw Bobby Ryan start last season in Iowa.

Burke did a good job putting together a winning team however Murray did a good job moving players to keep the team competative. Ducks were one tough team in the playoffs because of the smart moves Murray made. I am not a Ducks fan but I really like what Murray has done. Should be GM of the year the way he shuffled players and then knocked out the highly touted Sharks.

I might add stealing defenseman Luca Sbisa, and 2 first round draft picks plus Lupul for Pronger. Luca Sbisa and 2 first round draft picks, pretty nice trade.

Not exactly right—the Ducks weren’t a cap-ceiling team in 2007; that occurred the year afterwards and had a lot to do with replacing yet retaining both Scott Niedermayer and Teemu Selanne—a move that’s still serving the Ducks, though.
Probably more accurate to say that Burke put the team in handcuffs as a result of winning a Stanley Cup, not in order to get one.
And Murray should still be thanking Burke—BB structured a lot of contracts to expire as he was heading out the door. The slate was clean to become Murray’s team, and so far I like the results.
