Crosby Needs To Speak Up

from Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review,

Stop and think about this for a moment: The head coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins couldn’t tell anyone yesterday if his captain, the NHL’s preeminent player, was skating or not.

“I really don’t know,” Bylsma said.

That’s astonishing.

Bylsma also couldn’t narrow down Crosby’s whereabouts, other than to say, “I don’t think he’s home right now,” referring to Halifax, Nova Scotia.

The team owner and general manager Ray Shero don’t know, either. Lemieux told me he last spoke with Crosby two weeks ago. Crosby isn’t even in regular contact with his teammates, from what I’m hearing, certainly a lot less than in summers past. That’s why they don’t know any more than anyone else.

Am I the only one who finds fault with Crosby and/or his people on this front?

And no one thinks they could possibly be lying? Jesus

I feel like this article is all about Dejan’s personal frustration with Sidney.  It doesn’t make any difference to me if Sid starts the season or not.  He will be back when he’s had no symptoms for over a month.  Until that happens, he’s not playing.  The fact that Sid spoke with Mario two weeks ago is good enough for me.

They are obviously lying. I don’t believe for a second that Crosby hasn’t talked to his team’s owner, GM, and coach, along with at least a few guys on the team that he’s undoubtedly become close friends with.

A head injury that has dragged on this long is obviously pretty serious. That being the case, I would expect Crosby to be hashing out a lot of his options in his head, and these are options that impact him on a personal—not just professional—level. He doesn’t owe anything to the Pittsburgh media, and while it stinks for the fans, I don’t think he owes them anything here, either.

I don’t have a problem with Crosby staying out of the spotlight, and not giving his employer daily updates. It’s not something that matters day to day anyways, as it can reoccur at any time. I kind of wish all of these Crosby reports would go away—they’re giving me a headache—I can’t imagine how Sid must be feeling!

I’m probably wrong (and I’m not a fan of Crosby), but the kid is only 24 years old and worried sick and confused that his career is threatened.  Paul Kariya, Eric Lindross, and Markus Naslund’s careers were never close to the same players that they once were after their concussions.  I’m sure he and the Penguins organization have thought of that over and over.  I hope that he recovers, and I hope that this is a wake up call for the league.  I don’t normally agree with Don Cherry, but he’s right on target with his complaints of the equipment being like armor, and his take on the instigator rule.  Frankly, the only ones who ever protected the stars in the league were the players themselves.

I thought reaction in these comments would be different than they are so far.

I’ll add that yeah, it’s the Penguins business to know what’s going on to a degree, they’re his employer, but this is a brain injury. What is today may not be in a week.

For us fans, his life is non of our business until he gets to training camp, and then his hockey life is our business.

And how far off is training camp? Less than two weeks? I pretty sure I can wait a little bit longer to hear what Crosby has to say.

Why would Pens managment lie? Saying that they haven’t had much contact with rosby and that they have know idea of his whereabouts paints rosby in a really bad light. So, if they are lying, then they are intentionally trying to make their star player look bad and throwing him under the proverbial bus.

Why would Pens managment, who pay rosby millions of dollars and who need rosby to make even more millions for them, make this particular stuff up? If Pens managment were going to lie, wouldn’t they say that they and their doctors have regular contact with rosby and that rosby is spending his offseason in quiet seclusion to allow his brain to heal?

Given rosby’s reputation within the league (voted biggest whiner by his peers), it is more reasonable to conclude that rosby, while recovering from a career threatening injury, has decided that he doesn’t need to keep the people who pay him millions of dollars apprised of his progress (or lack thereof).

As for him not owing anything to the media and the fans, that is absurd. For better or worse, he is one of the highest paid players in the NHL, the face of the NHL and the face of his team. He is recovering from a career-threatening injury. That makes it a huge news story in the NHL and he owes the NHL, his team, the media and the fans that indirectly pay his salary regular updates. Peyton Manning hasn’t disappeared or failed to keep the Colts up to date on his recovery. But then Manning has more class in his pinky finger that rosby has in total.

If he were healthy and had dropped out of the media spotlight in the off season because his father had been murdered (like Michael Jordan), then you would absolutely be correct—he wouldn’t owe the media or the fans anything, but that’s not the case.

Wow, the MSHM gets real upset when they don’t get what they want and know what’s going on . It’s like they got an entitlement attitude.
Get over it buddy, and wait for camp like the resr of us.

Don’t read them. I know that’s easier said than done, but give it a try.
