Crosby Says No To Letterman

from Larry Brooks of the NY Post,
Maybe Sidney Crosby is a fan of Jay’s or maybe he was upset at not being invited to Dave’s Super Bowl bash with Oprah, but folks around the NHL sure would be interested in learning even one of No. 87’s reasons for rejecting David Letterman’s invitation to host his Top Ten while the Golden Boy was in New York this week.
Upon learning of the snub, Slap Shots was told that this wasn’t the first time Crosby, who last year declined to appear on NBC’s “Today” show following Pittsburgh’s Stanley Cup victory, had rejected a request from Letterman’s “Late Show.”

For as much bashing as Sid gets for the “face of the NHL” crap, it’s important to remember that NONE of it comes as a result of HIS asking….
He fulfills media requests on every stop of every road trip, every home practice and every home game, and it goes on and on…..
But of course, he turns down Letterman, who tapes at 5:30pm, or 90 minutes before the Pens/Rangers game Thursday, and all of a sudden he gets flamed for it…. Now I realize that the Pens flew into NY on Wednesday late afternoon, and I’m gonna find out when they arrived at the airport, but that doesn’t mean he could get to Manhattan by then….
He’s in a no-win situation: He goes on the show, he gets blasted…. He turns it down, he gets blasted….

Yup, face of the NHL…
LOL, what a joke.

Tony, your point is very valid, but it comes with the territory for all these professional athletes.
Personally, I buy all the likely, legitimate reasons he has turned down Letterman, and don’t think it is a bad reflection on “the face of the NHL.” Just pointing out that while it might be “unfair” that he’s in a no-win situation, these are the situations and criticisms you must cope with when you choose a profession that is solely dependent on public interest and involvement.

That’s supposed to be journalism? More like a crusade against Crosby. No wonder the newspaper industry is doing so badly.

Tony, any stories or comments on why he turned down NBC/Conan after the Cup victory?
Posted by mrfluffy from Long Beach on 03/07/10 at 10:18 AM ET
No, I have no idea, but it’s not that important to me. For the hundreds of requests that he accepts, the fact that he gets blasted for a precious few is ridiculous….

Damn that Crosby for looking out in the best interests of his team. Wow, are all Red Wings fans this dense?

Wow, are all Red Wings fans this dense?
Now you see what Hawk fans have been dealing with for years!

Wrong. From hearing the way the UC cheers, there’s no such thing as a Blackhawks fan, only people who are there to root against the Red Wings.

Good for Crosby on declining Letterman Show. Letterman’s a tired, old gasbag and a pervert who seems obsessed with Sarah Palin and her daughter. There are a thousand other shows where Crosby can appear to promote the NHL.

Letterman tapes at 5:30 dumbass…
Also, confirmed by a Pens official that he wouldn’t have been able to make the Wednesday night taping either, they didn’t get into NY in time….

A 5:30 taping, that’s Crosby’s feeding time, then it nappy time for the little whinner.

Thanks for that, my first thought was that it conflicted with his work schedule. Too bad it didn’t work out with the taping schedule - after a while it won’t really be relevant for the Olympics tie-in (it’s probably only marginally relevant now, given the minimal attention span of the viewing public).

I am really starting to hate Crosby. All NBC did while the medals were being handed out was show Crosby. Enough with that *#$%@&.

Sid does not do entertainment stuff. He doesn’t like advertisements. He’s very private.
The timing was terrible. The Olympics just ended. The Pens just started playing again. Sid is focused on his hockey and his team.
Sid = Hockey. He will only do hockey related stuff. Letterman’s joke of a show is not hockey related. Kid had to focus on the slew of Pens games he had jammed up that week.

Thanks for posting this. The Top 10 bit is one of the most unfunny “funny” bits on late night, as is Dave’s show in general. I have a feeling Crosby didn’t turn it around b.c he shares my feelings, but whatever the reason - good choice!
