Crosby’s Recovery Still A Mystery

from Joe Starkey of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review,

Yet, there they were again, in an email response I received from Crosby’s agent, Pat Brisson, on Wednesday. The question seemed simple enough: What are the symptoms Crosby has been experiencing this summer?

Headaches? Dizziness? Balance issues?

Penguins general manager Ray Shero was asked the same question Monday. His mind-boggling response: “I don’t know the exact symptoms.”

What? If the man running the franchise’s day-to-day operations — the man responsible for making contingency plans if Crosby is unable to start the season — doesn’t know, who does?

I figured Brisson was a good bet. I asked him to identify the symptoms.

Brisson’s reply: “Sidney progressed a lot this summer. As Ray mentioned, he had occasional symptoms here and there. Camp is in a month. We will know better then.”

So the mystery continues. Crosby’s ordeal has been shrouded in haziness since the moment he was leveled by David Steckel near the end of the second period of the Winter Classic.

You shouldn’t.  There’s a whole lot of BS flying around and too few people are really willing to question why everything doesn’t add up, and why nobody will just answer questions straight.

Something is wrong, and for whatever reason I can’t figure out, Crosby… Shero.. the Pens… and Brissson all don’t want anyone to know about it.

It’s stuff like this that breeds rumors.  I’ve already heard speculation that Crosby doesn’t even have a concussion and has been secretly suspended for something nobody wants anyone to know about (ala Jordan quits basketball to play baseball because he was suspended a year for gambling).  PED’s are now being batted about even…

Ridiculous?  You bet.  Yet… you can’t prove it isn’t true right now because of the cone of silence around this.  And the nature of the injury (Crosby gets injured, plays anyways, then mysteriously has to be pulled form the lineup for the season) hasn’t helped the crazy rumors.

It’s only going to get worse.  And all of this could be prevented if someone just was up-front and honest about what’s really going on instead of making blanket statements, then backing off them, and then claiming to not know anything at all…

Geez—you would think by this description that Steckel went all Scott Stevens on him…

Technically he was leveled.  And he was leveled by Steckel.  What Steelers fans and the faithful PuPitt media fail to acknowledge is that the contact was incidental.  Hence no penalty, no fine, nor suspension.

I’m not surprised we’re not getting more details.  Hockey teams are famous for being vague about injuries, i.e. “upper body injury,”  “lower body injury,” etc.

We know he had (or has) a concussion.  What’s clear is that he’s not yet recovered.  I’m sure the Pens organization is pretty much freaking out about this.  But we shouldn’t be surprised if they don’t tell us much.

I’m no fan of Crosby, but I hate to see any athlete hurt in this way.  I wish him well, hope he will be able to play again, and hope he has no permanent damage.

That’s pretty easy to squash. The NHL doesn’t test for PEDs after the regular season.

What it comes down to is noone has the “right” to know Crosby’s medical condition, but him and his employer. They’ll tell us what they want, when they want and not a moment sooner. It doesn’t look good, but that’s about all we can guess.
