Dallas Finishes Off San Jose

...and it ‘only’ took 129 minutes and 3 seconds, the 8th longest game in Stanley Cup Playoffs history (so sayeth TSN).

From Richard Durrett at the Dallas News blog:

The half asleep AAC is now fully awake. Stars headed to the Western Conference Finals.

Wow. What a game. Third longest game in Stars playoff history.

Quite fitting that captain Brenden Morrow got it. He’s been leading this team during the playoffs. He got it on the PP. Marty Turco was sensational. So was Evgeni Nabokov.

The Dallas/Detroit series opens Thursday and the Pittsburgh/Philadelphia series opens Friday. [Complete schedule here]

Update 3:08am ET: More from the AP via the Dallas Morning News here.  Game highlights on video below, plus a few more notes.

Update 3:32am ET: A few more notes from the Dallas Stars after the game --

  • Tonight’s game officially lasted 5 hours and 14 minutes, beginning at 8:10 pm and ending at 1:24 am. (CST)
  • Marty Turco made a franchise-record 61 saves in the game tonight, stopping 61-of-62 shots.
  • Dallas had 55 shots on goal. The franchise record is 76 at Vancouver in Game One of their first round series against the Canucks last year.
  • The 62 shots against is a Stars opponent record for shots in a playoff game. (was 56 by Vancouver last season).
  • Dallas has won four of its last five overtime games in the playoffs. Brenden Morrow has scored the game-winner in three of them (Mattias Norstrom had the other).
  • The attendance for Sunday’s game was 18,532, Dallas’ 26th sellout of the season and 12th consecutive sellout (including the last six regular season games). The club has also sold-out 17 of the past 18 home dates.

I agree, FlyersFan.  That’s also why I scoff at those who consider low scoring games boring.

So many chances...Turco, wow.  Shoulda, woulda, coulda.  They don’t get in an 0-3 hole...who knows.

Back to the drawing board.  Have they learned their lesson this time?

What a game!  Completely worth all 129 minutes!

The Nabokov save is definite highlight reel material.  Absolutely insane.  Morrow was fantastic, I would give him the series MVP for sure.

2-1, now that’s some good hockey!!

Just got home.  Amazing game, one of the best goalie performances I’ve ever seen.  San Jose should hold their heads high for a great comeback effort from 0-3.  Sad to see it might have been the last game for JR, since Hull retired he’s been the best spokesman for what’s right and wrong about the game.

It’s going to be a blast facing the Wings, ought to be one heck of a series.  I think Detroit has too much fire power from too many guys but hey that’s why they play the games.

Well, it’s finally over.  The so called “hottest” team in the NHL has been dispatched.  Meanwhile (and unfortunately), the actual two hottest teams in the NHL continue to play on (Detroit and Pittsburgh).
